Firefox especially, but Chrome and IE were having big trouble loading pages, CPU running at 100%. I ran Malwarebytes, (then unistalled it), Kaspersky (then uninstalled it), Spybot, Windows Defender. CPU is still at 100%. Processes in Taskmanager don’t add up to 100%. I can’t find the problem. Chrome tabs still have the little semi-circles turning for hours.
Also, in the task manager, are you checking “show processes from all users”? You need to have that checked to see the system processes and so on, if you expect the numbers to add up to something close to 100% (it’s a continually refreshed display, and rounded off to integer values, so it won’t be exact). Normally, you should see the “System Idle Process” taking most of the CPU if nothing is going on.
Note - I’m looking at a Win 7 task manager, but I don’t believe the process display has changed radically with different windows versions.
SDMB to the rescue again. Turning on “Show processes from all users”, I saw that my internet accountability program had gone nuts and was getting every CPU cycle it could get. I killed it, and it booted itself back on, and things are better now. Even the Chrome tabs have finished loading. Sometimes it’s a simple fix…
