Go back and look at the 4th comment posted at the end of that NYT article. There is a link to what appears to be a mugshot of the 16yo kids mother on drug charges and for occupying a condemned dwelling.

And boy, does she look seriously creepy.

Yeah. There’s some seriously odd stuff going on here and this is probably only the tip of the iceberg.

And she’s described in the article as “A striking woman, tall and rail thin.” Maybe it’s just me, but that brings to (my) mind a totally different picture than the woman pictured.

Have any mothers of murders gone on record to say something like: "He was a terrible boy. He always creeped me out. I should have smothered him when he was 3, when I had the chance.

Yeah, even the parents of the Columbine killers talked about what nice boys their kids were and how they never saw it coming (just finished reading a book on the subject, which is why I bring this particular case up). And by all accounts they (the parents) were fairly well-adjusted folks with no odd predilections.
