Why would anyone call a hooker on Craigslist?

My SO and I recently started using Craigslist to buy and sell used crap. After a couple of days, we noticed the little tab that says “erotic” and clicked on it. Much to our surprise, it looks like it’s mostly hookers. Maybe we’re just naive, but this seems a little bit weird.

My question is as the thread title states. Who is buying (renting?) a hooker on craigslist? Isn’t this just a surefire way to get arrested? I’m confused about humanity right now, and this sure isn’t helping.

Thanks for pointing this out. I’ll get back to you on how it works out.

These aren’t your Daddy’s prostitutes either!

The same people who use escort services that promise a date with a girl, but not the sex.

The listings have pictures!

Well, I do notice that it seems like a lot of people coming to Las Vegas are wanting to see if they can find something that will stay in Vegas.

If you should go to Craig’s list and check out the Gay listings in Las Vegas, about half of them, if not more, are people in town for conventions or family get-togethers and they are looking for, uh, more…

Many many people utilize these services.

A great deal of them are ripped off in the process, and have to call me, their police dispatcher, to report some sort of theft. The amusing thing is listening to them tapdance around the issue.

I did have one guy who was legitimately robbed (marched into a park at gunpoint, so they could steal his money and car) from a hooker and pimp that he hooked up with thru craigslist.

Conversely the females are not nearly so coy when they call because their Johns wouldn’t pay. Although they usually avoid the sex part of the deal… usually saying that they are “Private Dancers” and we need to respond to some such seedy hotel.

I guess my point is this: It is usable, probably the majority go smoothly, but Buyer Beware!

That is hilarious.

That must be kinda fun to hear. Some dude just trying to say that he got robbed by a hooker without saing he was, ya know, robbed by a hooker.

Also, this thread has a hilarious viewed-to-post ratio. I think this makes it 317:7!

Yep. Buyer beware.

Congrats wmulax93, your innocence is officially over. Yes, prosititution exists, and there is a market for it. The question is not “Who is buying on craigslist,” it’s “who is buying, period,” because it’s the same people who would seek out a pro with or without a craigslist to meet them on. My unscientific guess is probably 50% of all men would fit that description at some point in their lifetime, including men you know (not that that they would ever admit it to you). That’s a pretty sizeable market.

If you live in a place with an alternative newspaper, check their listings for services. Places that offer massages with table showers, etc. are all usually just covers for prostitution. People don’t want $150 just to give you a bath. There’s a lot of money to be made, and given how common these ads are (in the papers in New York and Seattle that I saw the ads are very explicit) the risk of arrest must be pretty low.

The internet has made it much easier to research the various ways to purchase sex in your area, but going on craigslist is just asking for trouble.

www.usasexguide.info (NSFW) is where I’d start.

Apparently, in Louisville, KY, you’re right about getting arrested. The police department recently set up a sting and arrested 27 people for responding to their ad.

Because with e-Bay, you never really know what you’re getting.

I have that look on my face right now.

Innocence… gone.

Surprised no one has linked The Girls of Craigslist (Safe for work.)

I’ll be joining a monastary now, thank you. That vow of celibacy is looking better all the time

Does it count as prostitution if you’re offering to swap for an epic flying mount? Or was that one a hoax?

My god. Those are some awful looking women.

:shudder:

A lot of them are cops. I’ve seen many a case where a guy learned that the hard way.

Lets be honest, if she looked like Julia Roberts she wouldn’t have to use Craigslist to find johns.

Sadly, this one actually seems to be real:
