My iBook decided to give me the old ‘blue screen of death’ yesterday, and after running disk utility and hardware tests and those showing zero problems, I took it into the IAT servcies place here on campus. They told me they could try and back up my mp3s then I should reboot. My pictures are already burned to CDs and I have nothing else of importance on there at the moment.
If they are unable to retreive my mp3s, is there a way to be able to plug my iPod back into my rebooted computer and not lose all of the songs on the iPod? Because if I understand correctly, you cannot transfer songs from an iPod to iTunes. I have little faith in all of my songs being recovered and it would be virtually impossible to get them all back (had to sell my CDs for money last year…didn’t feel like selling plasma).
A little hunting on VersionTracker should be able to find oyu a few utilities that allow you to access, from the Finder, those “Hidden” places mp3’s are stuffed on an iPod, too. Although from personal experience it’s a bit time consuming.
Also, myskepticsight , what version iPod do you have? If it’s 1st or 2nd, for future reference you can install an OS on your iPod and boot from IT, which gives you a lot more options for disk utilities and whatnot (DiskWarror has helped me in the past)…
To go off of Whifton_Polekitty, I got a great little app off of VersionTracker called “senuti” (Which I did not figure out was iTunes backwards until a year and a half after I started using it), which does exactly what you would want, and works great. I use it to transfer my music between my main machine which stores my music, and the portable I share with my wife, to keep hard drive space used to a minimum.
