As a (former) resident of Utah I always loved reading gripe letters in the local rag from people who had recently moved there claiming how crazy/backwards everything was. Usually they griped about the availability of liquor and/or porn. Now I’m a resident of Washington (state) and while I find the easy access to booze and porn refreshing I must gripe about the highway driving. A lot of people like to drive as slow as they please in the far left lanes, no matter if the right lane is occupied or not; no matter if you ride their bumper begging to pass. A lot of folks also enjoy driving as slow as they please in the diamond (commuter) lanes while people zip past them in the regular lanes, why are they in that lane? Another favorite of mine is the old “drive in the extreme left until 20 yards before your exit” trick, then dash across 5 lanes to get off. By far the most annoying practice is the “I’ll teach you not to speed!” maneuver which involves putting your car in the path of a speeder and hitting the brakes. My wife has the best story though, once after speeding past a certain driver (who flashed his lights and waved his arms wildly as my wife zipped past), this guy trails her off the highway and at the light gets her to role down the window. He yells “Hey, you know the speed limit is 60 and you were speeding! You waste fuel and its very dangerous when you speed like that! You shouldn’t do that!” I was just wondering if anyone else thinks a certain state or area’s drivers are nuts, or if I’m the crazy Utah driver people from Washington complain about? Phew, sorry about the length…
I’m from New York, but last time I went to Boston I was horrified by the way people drive there! They have no courtesy whatsoever!
Well, before this thread gets moved, it seems like driving in Washington, per your description, is very much like driving here in Michigan! People have NO CONCEPT of what the left lane is for. And this is DESPITE the MDOT’s efforts to post expensive “Slower Traffic Keep to the Right” signs all over the place.
