90-foot kayak plunge into Black Creek Gorge. Iknow the extremely high water actually makes the plunge safer, but holy crap, it sure LOOKS like falling into the mouth of Hell.
Beautifully executed and they did a great job setting up the various shots.
Right over the tongue, then give the river your paddle. That was fun to watch.
I remember Knock Up Lulu from when I was a kid, but I never saw that much water going over it.
Great video!
That looks higher than Cumberland Falls, which is supposed to be the largest in the Southeast. off to check
Cumberland has higher flow, I believe, but Noccalula is higher. Thing is, it’s highly episodic because it’s a flashy headwater stream. Most of the time, the flow is a fraction of what you see in the video. But when we have high rainfall, Noccalula rages.
Yes, Cumberland is 125 feet wide, so much more water flowing over, and much more consistently too. I saw a photo of Noccalula that was barely a trickle. This video here is sure impressive! I bet Cumberland is raging right now too, with all the rain we’ve had.
It surely would be nice if there were some authority for establishing the truth to the various claims for superlatives of waterfalls east of the Mississippi.
There are at least two I’m aware of who do some bragging along those lines:
and I can’t remember the name of one in eastern Canada…
Yeah, true isn’t it? Cumberland was years ago touted as “the Niagara of the South,” which if you see it, it’s completely puny compared to Niagara but as run-of-the-mill (ha!) waterfalls go, it’s fairly impressive. A photo I took.
Plus, at what distance would a fall be one, versus two separate falls? Another Fall Creek drops 300 feet in about a mile, mostly by large waterfalls. Does that little lip before the main Fall Creek Falls count? If not, then Taughhannock Falls would move up in the standings (although not to number 1) because it’s a straight plunge.
Quite impressive! Wide at any rate. The first time I saw Fall Creek Falls was after they had had heavy rains in the early spring and the flow was amazing. Not quite as heavy as the Noccalula video, but still awe-inspiring. Since the creek is dammed to make a lake, in drier weather it’s down to a trickle and really puny looking.
Wow, that’s pretty amazing! I’ve never seen the falls look so strong, it must be just after some huge storm. Wow though, those guys are nuts!
I gotta say I love the music, too. That is one filthy bass drop.
Wow. Though I do wonder why they used 300 dollar graphite paddles. Yeah you might die but if you don’t you still might frack up or loose your paddle. I’d use some crap 20 dollar paddle to do this (though I am a cheap bastard).
Their sponsor might have provided 'em.
Could be. Though you know some local rednecks in innertubes did this 5 minutes later after seeing this.
It got on my nerves, but then I get annoyed when a song only has one or two (vocal) lines that they just repeat over and over…and over and over.
Having said that. I looked it up while it was playing (gotta love Shazam), here ya go.
Amateur hour. Here’s a video of someone going over Palouse Falls in Washington: 186 feet. I’ve visited this area and it’s an amazing place. How is it that kayakers aren’t crushed by the water and can survive that impact?
Why do Dopers feel they must do this kind of crap?
Thread shit? Or one-up without a video link?
I’d guess this is the video in question.
Can’t say that I see much wrong with posting links to over-the-waterfall videos in a thread on that subject.
