Creating a reasonable "control" for evaluating nutritional supplements and nootropics

I’ve always been interested in “smart” drugs and nutrients. I’ve decided to embark on a program and would like to create a reasonable control to see what works and what doesn’t. The problem is that many of the nutrients/drugs have an instant effect and others take months. Many of them are also synergistic. Another problem is I often seem to get the side effects immediately from taking those nutrients whose beneficial effects often take much longer. Example: I took phosphatidylserine yesterday morning (1/3 the recommended dose) and stayed up till 7am this morning from a (not unpleasant) speedy effect. Some of the nutrients/drugs I’m interested in include (Drugs were obtained legally via prescription):

Hydergine
Piracetam
Centrophenoxine
Vinpocetine
5-HTP
L-Theanine
Phosphatidylserine
Ginko Biloba
Rhodiola Rosea
Your basic EFAs, C, B, Zinc.

Is there a reasonable way to about creating a control without having to serially chain 3 month windows for those nutrients that take longer to work? I figure not but any insights would be appreciated, particulary from those with first hand experience.
