They didn't need to. They can estimate the strength of muscles by examining the thickness of bone around the muscles insertion points. They do this in forensic medicine too to reconstruct human faces.

I do find it hard to believe all of these Neanderthals got arthritis of the face. Arthritis is not contageous. Why is everyone arguing about Neanderthals anyway, they are not a direct link to homo sapiens.

That's an easy one. :) As different "tribes" of the critters migrated to different environments, they would be under different environmental pressures to survive, thus would evolve into more than one separate line. I am also not sure exactly what the link between Australiopithecus and HS has been determined to be. It seems there are a number of different models for this potential evolution (some involving A. Africanus, some A. Afarensis. Has any consensus been reached?
