Suprisingly in America alot of people still believe in the literal creation (even George W. Bush described evolution and creationism as two competing scientific theories which had yet to be proved).
Of course these people generally have very little scientific education.
I side with the scientists on the question, but only because I think think the dichotomy as usually posed by the Creationists is logically flawed. (To see a relatively brief explanation why, go here )
But I would hardly call it quaint. The arguments can be quite sophisticated. For instance, biochemist Michael Behe’s Darwin’s Black Box: the biochemical challenge to evolution.
There are many people who do believe in creationism (with a small ‘c’). In fact, anyone who proclaims to be a Christian will believe God created the earth.
There is nothing in holding such a belief that contradicts evolution or in fact implies a less than adequate IQ, as you seem to believe. Read this post by Polycarp, for example.
There are, of course, others who believe in Creationism with a big ‘C’ too.
Such as this guy.
Is this the ‘factual’ answer you were looking for in this forum?
It’s one of those culture clashes, people from outside of the US (particularly Europe) are generally amazed when they here that there are still some people there that believe in literal biblical creation.
I’d also like to point out that Aro’s figure of 2 billion is only for the number of Christians in the world and only a tiny minority of these are biblical Creationists.
** Aro ** - don’t be so simplistic. That 2 billion is basically the number of Christians in the world - which would broadly include everyone I know, bar a handful of Jews and Muslims and the occasional Hindu. None of the Christians I know believe in the Christian Creation.
To quote Disraeli - “…lies, damned lies and statistics…”
Actually, it belongs in the Pit. When you say, “I mean anyone with an IQ over 75.”, you are no longer asking for fact.
Wellllll, actually, this thread doesn’t belong on the boards at all, since it’s been done a million times before and we are trying to fight ignorance, not promote it.
Hey, I know! We could start a debate in GD about why beliefe in a Creator automatically indicates a low IQ.
Creationism vs creation vs evolution vs creation by means of evolution has been discussed in fascinating detail by many very intelligent people for quite a few years now. Even on the SDMB.
Read a little (including the links already provided) and you may learn something.
I know several people who believe the Bible to be literally and infallibly true/factual, including the Genesis creation account. They are not stupid people, but their intelligence tends to be deeper than it is broad.
The ‘big names’ of creationism (i.e. the guys churning out all these oft-repeated bits of anti-evo rhetoric) are clearly quite intelligent, in fact, I often suspect that they fully understand the fallacious nature of some or all of what they are saying, but say it nonetheless because (some)people want to be convinced by it.
Why? Offensive as it may be - at a certain level of stupidity, people will probably believe anything they are told… I am still just asking for the facts. (Sorry if my comment about IQ was a little too close to home…)
Are you sure that you are sure of this? At the risk of becoming Scottish…
My point is that I believe you are confusing ‘Creationism’ with a belief in creation. They are very different things.
A literal acceptance of the creation myth as is written verbatim in the Bible is not the same as believing that God had a hand in the formation of the universe.
Tarantula it would be biblical creation as Judaism uses Genesis every so often. As for an example of a person who believes, or at least professes creationism, I give you Jack Chick. http://www.chick.com/
Tarantula, if you’re really looking for facts, this is the place, but it is best not to insult the intelligence of the people who are in a position to give you those facts. Inasmuch as this was ever a General Question, it has been answered. If instead you want to debate about creationism, GD is the place for that. If you want to rant or take cheap shots about the stupidity of people who don’t agree with you, the Pit is the place for that.
NoClueBoy, this is not the place or insults. If you can’t be bothered to post them in the proper forum, don’t post them at all.
