IMHO, artists fall into two categories: Those whose names you recognize and whose works you know and those who didn’t have access to the publicity machinery [agents, reps, galleries, record labels or lineage] required to bring notoriety.

Steve Jobs (and to a lesser extent, Steve Wozniak, but Jobs was always the creative one of the pair. Woz would have been brilliant but languished in obscurity giving away his inventions).

Even Mozart could qualify, IMHO.
