I have decided to try to organize my scribblings and musings into a manuscript. I know there are some writers here and I’m hoping I can get some suggestions regarding a writing software program.
I’ve read that Scrivener is a great program from writing blogs (and meets my budget) but if I Google, “best creative writing software” it doesn’t make it to the top ten. Any suggestions?
Also, I have Word. Would it be possible to write in Word and later C&P it into a writing program or do you have to write directly into the program?
I’m pretty clueless on these matters and would appreciate any input and suggestions. If it matters, I have a Mac. Thanks.
I don’t know how a software program can help with creative writing. When I just want to write I use a plain ol’ text editor. Word wrapping of course, but that’s it. I don’t want to be distracted with fonts and formatting. I just want to focus on the words.
Scrivener is the gold standard. It can do anything you really want to do when writing.
It has a good word processor core, and I really like the Full Screen mode that blacks out everything but your text document to help with distractions.
Scrivener has a fantastic outlining system. The corkboard is pretty, but also pretty functional too. Much easier mapping out scenes and switching them around, all while staying organized. It also has Dropbox support, extensive notes and research support, you name it.
You can’t really go wrong with it. I’d highly recommend it. I’m pretty sure you can download a free trial at their website. They do offer a Windows version now, too, so there’s no reason not to try. You probably won’t try anything else.
Just as a note, I have, and use, Scrivener. And while they do have an affiliate program, I’m not involved in it and don’t have any investment in the program or the company.
Thank you to the posters who responded. The links and were helpful, as was the review by Jules .
