Credit card number stolen at gas pump

Who do these lowlife losers think they are??!! What makes them so hateful and without a conscience??

Someone stole my credit card number from the computer at a local gas station…i paid at the pump and the next day i had 3,000 worth of charges to gucci and bloomingdales.

Who ARE these people?! And you Know what will happen IF they get caught…just a little slap on the wrist and some probation.
I think if you steal from another person and you get caught, they should cut off a limb from your body.

How dare someone steal something they didn’t do a day of work to get? I will never understand the mentality of people who think it’s perfectly acceptable to steal from someone.

Then to have the audacity to go on a high end shopping spree?! Unreal.
anyone else ever have this happen to them?

Positive you didn’t accidentally hit “Y” for the “SHOPPING SPREE? Y/N” prompt?

positive. my credit card rule of thumb is i don’t put a balance higher than what i can pay off with one paycheck. this shopping spree was done 15 hours from where i live and work…and falls WAY outside of the “one paycheck” rule.

At least you had high class thieves - a woman who works with me had her wallet stolen from her office and they spent a grand at the Dollar General and the Solid Gold Beauty Salon.

yeah…high class. they also bought a meal at five guys. HOW do they do this without actually having the credit card in their hands? it boggles the mind. seriously.

Its trivially easy to buy a mag stripe writer and write any data you want to credit card blanks, including your stolen credit card number. The hard part is the embossed numbers on the front which is why some stores make the clerk type the last 4 in - so they are sure you didn’t just swipe a blank card.

Why do you assume it was the gas pump?

The prudent thing to do with stolen credit card info is not to turn around and use it the next day. The thing to do is sit on the info for a while.

Otherwise you run the risk of someone being able to easily point to the origin of the heist.

Is it true that the punishment for $3000 of theft is just a slap on the wrist and some probation?

And technically they didn’t steal from you. They stole from your credit card bank and/or the merchants who might have to refund the money to the credit card issuer. You certainly are not on the hook for $3000.

I’m not trying to defend credit card fraudsters, trust me. But you seem to be lacking perspective here.

I say they stole from me bc of the violated feeling I have about this…i’ve had a vehicle stolen from me too(about 10 years ago)…same violated feeling. I get what you’re saying though. Even though i’m not on the hook for the money, technically ALL consumers and credit card holders are on the hook for theft bc that means higher interest rates, higher price tags on items in stores, more restrictions, etc…we ALL get stolen from when these fraud experts steal.

i now have to change all of my direct debit accounts, had to get rid of that card and wait for a new one to come, in addition to all the phone calls I had to make communicating back and forth with the fraud department. it has been a mess.

The fraud department told me they’ve done some sort of flag on the gas station where I was and asked if I typically use that station for gas…i guess that’s what is leading me to believe it happened at the pump. i had never used that particular station before. I imagine it could have happened anywhere but I typically only use that card for gas and groceries. I’m at a loss for where else it could have been stolen from really.

How would the station even have a merchant account if this had happened before? After multiple credits card numbers are copied, then you have to assume an employee fraud or someone hacked their computer or both. I would thing the bank would cancel their account.

i don’t know :frowning: i’m just in the dark on this one.

Skimmer devices are becoming quite sophisticated and increasingly difficult to detect without close scrutiny. Some have even been found on indoor ATMs in banks. Gas pumps are trivial. How close do you look at a gas pump? Did you have to enter your billing zip code?

You’re not being terribly rational right now, but I can hardly blame you. It’s a terrible feeling to go through something like this.

An ex-GF had some Christmas presents stolen from her car. Yeah, her bad for leaving them there. But the thief permanently fucked up the driver’s side lock and bashed in the front fender. It’s like the thief had to throw and extra “fuck you” in for good measure.

If it was a “skimmer” device attached to the pump, I doubt very much that any gas statiion employee was involved. Some of the devices the police have siezed show that they would be fairly simple to install/deinstall without the attendant’s knowledge.

It was most likely acquired at the last point of sale because of the time sensitive nature of the crime. It was probably sold by the clerk to a professional card theft ring and then resold within hours or used directly.

Credit card fraud is a felony, unless I’m mistaken. For $10 or for $3000.

And if you cut a limb from someone, they should cancel all your credit cards!

Law abiding people (very) often throw temper tantrums when clerks and servers ask them to abide by the verification process for credit cards. (Not signing the card, writing ‘please ask for ID’ and then not carrying ID,* using the number instead of the card) This, unfortunately, leads to many clerks letting things slide they shouldn’t.

Be grateful it wasn’t your debit info that was stolen. All of the consumer protections that credit transactions have are absent from debit transactions.

  • This isn’t legal at all, actually, but a lot of people do it. I’m sure that Scourge will get to them, any day now.

Welcome to the boards, Agent Violet!

I just read some articles on credit card skimming devices and that is pretty scary. The skimmers that apply to the outside of the device didn’t look that hard to spot, but if they break into the pump and install it and it would be totally invisible. They also mentioned a brand of gas pump that has a universal key that will work on any pump of the brand.

My first reaction is that I need to use my debit card a lot less, since credit cards have much more legal protection if the number is stolen. Stick to cash or credit cards. Also I need to check my accounts every week.

They rarely prosecute.

It is against credit card company rules to require ID as a condition for using your credit card for a purchase. Also, it is against credit card company rules to accept unsigned cards.

Whoa… I’m seeing double!

Sounds like they bought the items to pawn them for cash. Expensive items from Gucci and Bloomingdales are easier to fence.
