Credit card payment option is not working

I just wanted to let you know that the credit card payment option is not working. I needed to renew my membership. I clicked on the pay by credit card option, but the page failed to load and I got an error message saying that the connection timed out. I tried again several times over the next hour or so, but I always got the same result. Finally, I paid with PayPal. Thanks

It might be better to e-mail a mod or an administrator.

Unfortunately some major network restructuring at the Chicago Reader Friday evening/early Saturday morning has impacted the availability of the subscription payment system. I’m working on the issue and should have it resolved by start of business Monday. In the interim the PayPal payment option remains available.

Telperien can’t reup. She tried and it looked like it went through, but didn’t. Asked me to post for her.

Tell her to try again; I was having the same problem. I sent jdavis an email about it. Finally, it worked.

I just tried to subscribe by credit card. Didn’t work. Used PayPal instead.

I’ll let Jerry know.

I fixed it on Saturday night. It was working during Sunday. Apparently I must have unfixed it on Monday while making other changes Monday morning.

Should be working again.

It just now took me ten minutes to get to the credit card page, and I’m still waiting for the confirmation. E-mail has been sent. You’d really think the Reader would feed the hamsters powering the server taking money from us.

Update - it timed out before I got a confirmation, and my profile shows I haven’t paid. Is there anyone who I can check the status of the credit card submission with? I don’t want to put everyone through the hassle of a refund if I try again and find out two charges have gone through.

I see it is still broken. Will subscriptions be extended until credit card payments work again? Not all of us have or want PayPal.

Subscriptions will not be extended but I will manually process anyone’s credit card transaction and add one year to your subscription. In order to do that I will need the following:

  1. Make a photocopy of your credit card (both front and back of card). Print on the photocopy your SDMB username, credit card number, and expiration date.
  2. Fax the photocopy to (312) 828-0865.
  3. Send an e-mail to jdavis@chicagoreader.com including your SDMB username, name, address, and e-mail address. State in that e-mail that you have faxed me your credit card information.

I will manually process your credit card, update your subscription, and send you an e-mail confirming that your subscription has been updated.

Personally, I wouldn’t have a problem sending a scan of my credit card to Jerry. I’ve been here awhile and I would trust him with it.

But you can’t seriously believe that the majority of guests and new members will blithely hand over their credit card numbers, do you? Every neuron in their brains is screaming, “Bad idea! Bad idea!” We’re told over and over again never to trust our numbers to someone else (Especially on the internet.) and you come along and wonder why people have a problem with this plan?

Jerry is between a rock and a hard place here.

While he works on getting the problem fixed he has PayPal to offer you and he has this other workaround to offer you. Until he gets the fix to stay fixed that’s what we got. If it was perfect it wouldn’t be a workaround.

No one is going to be happy until it’s fixed – probably Jerry most of all.
