It’s not? Shit, that’s where I went wrong. Damn.
Fooled around and fell in Love - Elvin Bishop
The gist is "I was a mysogonistic pig…till I me YOU babe!
Can I please be forgiven for nominating a band / album or two? The heavy metal band King Diamond are famous for their concept albums so it’s kinda difficult to choose just one song.
Them (1988) is just so creepy every time I hear it chills go down my spine. Some fanciful and playful songs hand in hand with evil riffs and almost classical notes telling the secrets of Amon, what they do to poor Mother and Missy and King going insane.
The Puppet Master (2003) is a more straightforward horror story with absolutely spine tingling moments - and some real scares. Beautiful music and lyrics echo a claustrophobic horror environment with a shocking twist ending.
“Ghost Riders in the Sky” and “Long Black Veil” by Johnny Cash come to mind.
“I Gotcha” may look creepy on the printed page, but the mood evoked by Joe Tex’s performance is so over-the-top silly that it is hard to take the song seriously, or to take its protagonist as threatening.
He was the first to leap into my head.
Billion Dollar Babies
If I’m too rough, tell me; I’m so scared your little head will come off in my hands.
There’s always Timothy, a jaunty tune about cannibalism. Written by the guy who sang Escape (The Piña Colada Song).
So, you know, '70s cannibalism.
Perfect ‘B’ side for Timothy would have been D.O.A., Ah the 70’s. They really don’t make songs like that anymore.
“Life … is flowing out my body … Pain is flowing out … with my blood …”
I always thought the guy was a vampire.
When I think about creepy songs, I think about No Quarter by Led Zeppelin. The tune is as creepy as the lyrics.
“Young Girl” by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap
So many lines to choose from, but here’s a few:
Bloodrock’s D.O.A. is so creepy I don’t even listen to it anymore.
Donovan’s * Mellow Yellow* has some skeevy lyrics
I’m just mad about Fourteen.
Fourteen’s mad about me.
I’m-a just mad about-a Fourteen.
She’s just mad about me.
Members of The Toadies aren’t really clear on the subject.
Here’s another nomination, Nickelback’s “Figured You Out”. Choice snippets include:
That album also has “Family Snapshot” about the Kennedy assasination
“I want to be somebody - you were like that too. If you don’t get given, you learn to take, and I will take you”
Brr…
I suppose Blue Oyster Cult’s See You In Black might be regarded as creepy by some:
*I’d like to see you in black
It’d make me feel like your husband’s dead
I’d like to see you in black
We could make him suffer instead
…You can’t lie to me Ann
You can’t pretend he isn’t beating you up
I saw the marks on your hands
I saw the blood on your coffee cup
I’d like to see you in black I’d like to see you in black
I’d like to see you in black I’d like to see you in black*
Now a Lifetime movie starring Tom Hanks, Valerie Bertinelli and Ozzy Osbourne.
Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana.
‘I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black.’
A darker ode to lusting for someone you hate was never written.
Angie Baby - Helen Reddy
Sublime’s Wrong Way:
It’s not supposed to be love. It’s a revenge song. He used to love her in the “do anything for her” sort of way and she treated him like shit. He’s managed to turn the tables to where she’s chasing him and he can treat her like shit.
Under my thumb
The girl who once had me down
Under my thumb
The girl who once pushed me around
[…]
The change has come
She’s under my thumb
He doesn’t love her (he says he gets to check out other girls). He’s just giving back what she used to give him. No argument that it’s petty but it doesn’t really creep me out.
Damn. I find that song haunting, but it’s one of my fav. beautiful “wrong” songs.
