CREEPY CRAWLIES

Cecil-what’s the latest information you have on microscopic creepy crawlies? Have there been any discoveries of a new bacteria or virus (or a number of them)? I’m planning to travel to France soon (probably April of next year) and for that reason and just idle curiosity I want to know what you know about organisms that have recently evolved (or which have always existed but are just now being awakened). I know ebola is out there and there’s the flesh-eating strain of strep but I think there’s vaccinations for those. What about ones for which there is no treatment? And I wish more people would wash their hands! It doesn’t take long! A lady manning a food table at a church acted offended when I very politely requested she not hand me a hotdog bun. But really I don’t give a flip about the contact spread. What concerns me is the airborne. When a serious enough one of those gets going, there’s the end of the world. What to do? Thanks from----------------Tom

ACTUALLY IT’S STILL ME…I CAN’T SEEM TO GET TO WHERE I CAN JUST “ADD.” ONE THING I’M STARTING TO WONDER ABOUT IS FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS. THERE’S SOME PEOPLE I KNOW WHO WON’T EAT ANYMORE AT FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS-AT ALL. AND IT REALLY DOESN’T HAVE TO DO WITH STUFF THAT GETS INTO COWS OR VEGGIES OR WHATEVER-IT HAS TO DO WITH PEOPLE’S HYGIENE AND CONDITIONS WHERE ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING CAN JUST FLY RIGHT IN AND DO WHO KNOWS WHAT. THIS SCARES ME. HAS ANYONE HEARD ANYTHING? THANK YOU.

Welcome to the SD message board, Dopetalker. There is no vaccine for ebola virus (an extremely rare disease you are unlikely to come in contact with) and I’m not sure there’s one for necrotising faciitis. For more information about travel advisories, look at: http://www.cdc.gov/travel/

Dopetalker. You seem very concerned about food safety issues at fast food establishments. Do you really think proper hygiene is maintained at ANY restaurant? Let me assure you that disgusting practices occur in all of the restaurant kitchens I’ve had the pleasure of working in. Sorry! It’s one of those things you have to put out of your head.
