I remember when I was in catholic school in the 50’s cremation was a bozo no no.
Now I hear a commercial for a catholic cemetary in the SF Bay Area advertising cremation services.
So what’s with that? Is that service banned for church members, but the business can sell it to others?
Its slightly possible that I mis-remember the ban, but not likely. I am gettin’ old (67).
Peace,
mangeorge
I believe that since Vatican II, cremation is permissible as long as the ashes are interred.
I’m no longer a practicing Catholic, but I do recall when the prohibition on cremation for Catholics was rescinded (IIRC, it’s been in the past 20-25 years).
Edit: apparently, the prohibition on cremation itself was removed in 1963, but it was only in 1997 that the Vatican decided to allow the presence of cremated remains at a funeral Mass. And, as friedo notes, the ashes aren’t allowed to be scattered.

I haven’t been a practicing member since my Mom gave up trying to convince me to go to church, which would have been sometime around 1960. A lot of the changes go unnoticed be me.
Thanks
