the Wikipedia article on the pre-eradication pigs in Haiti Creole pig - Wikipedia makes it sound like this was some absolute wonder of a pig, for 3rd world conditions. Now, if that were the case, how come this uber-pig didn’t spread all over the world to other poor countries? And if in fact there are other similarly adapted breeds of pigs elsewhere (in Africa, India, China etc), then why didn’t they get used during the “repopulation” after eradication of Creole pig? Even if the stupid/evil American aid groups just wasted all the aid money on the wrong, poorly adapted pigs, why didn’t some charity buy a million pigs of the optimal breed abroad and handed them out all over Haiti?
Well, there are similar pigs to the creole pig elsewhere. The reason the pigs brought into Haiti were Durocs and Hampshires rather than the other pigs is because Durocs and Hampshires were better pigs. They were more resistant to disease and put on weight faster.
The problem with the eradication wasn’t that the creole pig was some sort of superpig. It was that the pigs were destroyed without compensation to the farmers, thereby wiping out most of the assets of the small farmers, who then had to buy the expensive new pigs, which most of them couldn’t afford.
In short, it was a typical government policy during the Baby Doc regime. Expensive and showing the government’s disdain for the wellbeing of the poor.
