Being stumped is a different dismissal to a run out.
Well, that might be true, in the same way that being knocked out by a head butt is a different knock out to being king hit by a punch - but you’re still knocked out regardless.
My point being? Both forms of dismissal require an appeal to an umpire, and in this instance sanity prevailed and the spirit of the game was the winner.
How much of this ‘sanity’ was due to the baying of the crowd, do you think?
I’ve seen nothing of the incident, and only read a little, but a colleague expressed the opinion that it was only because of the hostile crowd that the decision was reversed…
Grim
My feeling was that the Indians were persuaded following the barracking that they got as they left the field for tea - coupled with an intervention by Straus and Andy Flower. Quite obviously the lack of sportsmanship was only going to lead to worse receptions for the rest of the match, if not the series so they probably only needed to reflect quickly on whether they really wanted that or not.
Agreed, and I suspect that on reflection Dhoni is happy with his decision. It didn’t change the match and having got that out of the way he can concentrate on the much bigger issues he has with his underperforming team lest England whitewash them.
Wow! did I really write that about an England team? how times change.
I thought the crowd reaction to the whole Bell run out issue post tea was classic Simpsons’ mob mentality. I half expected someone to shout “let’s just loot stuff anyway” whilst carrying pitchforks and flaming torches.
Trust me though - if you’re in the crowd and something untoward happens in a Test Match in England, you’re left totally in the dark. Quite a few people on the blogs who were at Trent Bridge have chimed in to say that the only thing that they knew about the incident was the 3rd Umpire decision. There was no tannoy announcement until well after Bell had restarted his innings, so no one knew what was going on. Maybe a bit of info would have stopped people behaving in such a way.
I was present at the England-Pakistan Oval test match that was abandoned after the Pakistani team refused to come out after tea. There was no tannoy announcement until about 90 minutes after the tea interval, and that was that play was finished for the day. I only knew what was happening because I rang my Dad to find out what was going on from the TV.
I suppose my general gripe is that the English grounds/ECB don’t treat the paying customer very well in these scenarios. Sports administrators in cock up shock.
But please tell me they spare you from little snippets of rubbish pop songs every break in play? I’ve basically stopped going to live sport in New Zealand due to this irritating habit.
India in all sorts of strife again, 75/4 at lunch on the first day at Edgbaston. Sehwag, Gambir, Tendulkar and crucially Dravid all gone. Two for Broad and two for Bresnan.
What are you? Psychic?
FOW 111-7.
So why is it that it felt just pure awesomesauce to steamroll Australia, but when we’re doing it to India I feel kind of sad? I think it’s because Australia’s greats had retired, and we were looking at a new generation. But watching Dhoni, Dravid, Laxman, and especially Tendulkar fail against our bowlers is heartbreaking, because we know how good they’re meant to be. Careers should end on a high.
224 all out. A recovery of sorts from India, but there doesn’t seem anything in this pitch to be overly concerned about.
32/0. England won’t be following on. Phew.
It has to be pretty demoralising to be an Indian cricketer on tour at the minute. Half their front line bowlers (and the two most experienced) are out injured. Your vaunted top order can’t buy a run, apart from Dravid. And you’re being bullied, without remorse, every session, with very little let up.
To top it all, your stuck in a country that has riots on the streets, so as you can’t even get out of the hotel for a meal without the team’s security officer ordering you back to quarters.
Good stuff from Dhoni to drag India’s total to respectability. I’m beginning to develop a bit of man-love for him - he’s been very classy throughout the tour and is trying to lead from the front. Shame the rest of his team are not following him as yet.
84/0 at the close, 140 behind. Yes, it’s a shame about all the Indian injuries. Zaheer Khan in particular caused a lot of problems on their last tour. However, England can only beat what is put in front of them, and after struggling to bowl out Sri Lanka in the first half of the summer they have certainly done that.
Nice! I’m on holiday at the moment and though skipping through the Austrian meadows is delightful, nothing can beat the visceral pleasure of imagining Jimmy and his merry band dismantling the Indians.
I suspect I left a load of bemused, Austrians, Germans and Dutch in my wake.
"Vy ist der crazy Englander looking at his mobile and pumping his fist so! zen shouting “Ja! Go Jimmy Go!”
A great start to the reply as well, Got to be a ton for Strauss surely?
Hmm. Strauss has a problem restarting innings in the morning. I’d be more confident in saying this if he were still there after the first hour tomorrow. Until then, I reserve judgement.
That said, the Indians bowled some real filth this evening. It’s possible that they put nothing in the hole for him to get out to and then he kicks on. Don’t like the look of Morgan and Bopara if we get in a hole and with Bell at 3, I’m quite keen for Strauss and Cook to kick on in the morning and ensure these guys come in with a secure position most likely.
Enjoy Austria. Bet they wouldn’t go down by 3 innings defeats in a 5 match series.
Lunch - and England still haven’t lost a wicket. Strauss should get a ton now, after being quite watchful for the opening part of the morning session. In point of fact, Cook’s Tavare-like 50 should probably be converted to a ton too.
Given the filth he has bowled this morning - and the fact that he generally behaves like a fucking prick - I am amazed Sreesanth is anywhere near India’s side. Shouldn’t a nation of 1bn be able to find someone better to bowl than this dickhead?
Anyway, given England probably have 2 or 3 more days to set a large total (and it will likely rain a bit during that time), I imagine, given progress thus far, that we could be looking at England trying to force an innings defeat in this game. To avoid that, India need to bowl better, field better and bat better in the second dig. They could probably fold these three objectives into one, thinking about it: play better cricket.
It’s just so *chilled *from England so far… no major heroics, just decent solid relentless cricket.
Praveen’s bowled 9 maidens off 16 overs and given away less than 30 runs, but Strauss and Cook are just chipping away steadily.
Fletcher was complaining about the amount of swing yesterday, but Bresnan pointed out the ball didn’t really move (which is a polite way of saying India’s batting was dire).
Even if the openers go soon after lunch you have to fancy the middle order to give India a real pummelling later on.
Well - bloody hell - Strauss out for 87. That should count as a failure - looked like he was going to make a huge hundred. In comes Bell - can India run at the new batsman and make this a contest again?
Bowled off a no-ball, at that! Mishra overstepped and Strauss would have won a review if he’d been able to see it.
