Yes, but we are too dependent on him. Big wakeup call and a bloody Houdini sorry AFRIDI act.
After watching a lot of the matches - far more than I should!- I am really warming to RSA. I may place a bet on them this afternoon.
Just my take so far of the main contenders:
India - too old, and not a good enough fielding side.
England- too many changes recently, bowling has been poor, fielding shoddy.
RSA- strong batting and bowling. Even their spinners have worked.
Australia- could be a surprise packet. Not played strong opposition yet.
Sri Lanka- moderate bowling.
Pakistan- too much turmoil. Could implode anytime.
West Indies- moderate.
New Zealand- no.
Well New Zealand just beat Zimbabwe with 10 wickets and 100 balls to spare. Meanwhile Bangladesh are bowled out for just 58…
Bangladesh have been a huge disappointment to me. I expected with their population and support for the game more could have been achieved. Granted, they may not have a great infrastructure.
Please don’t - as soon as anyone starts thinking we can win anything cricket-related we stop doing it… ![]()
I think it goes to our head and we assume that someone will gift-wrap the trophy and courier it to our home address and all we have to do is get up on the side of the bed that isn’t adjacent to the wall and sign on the clipboard.
Grim
Well well Windies … I thought I’d be able to catch a bit of the game but it was all over before I even got up!
On what you have said
India; its their bowling that lets them down, if Bangladesh can get to 290 against you then you deserve to lose. That said batting is their trump card.
-
England, not really come to the party yet, they have the talent.
-
RSA true, but not really been tested yet. They should win it, if they keep their nerve…err never mind
4)Australia: They have it all. Talent, experience, a culture of winning. They are the team the beat
-
Sri Lanka the middle order is the weak spot. Disagree WRT bowling, Murli and Malinga are not moderate at all
-
Pakistan. Patchy. Too patchy. Agree with the turmoil. Should implode [patriotic sentiment] History shows this is when they tend to win, see 1992 [/Patriotic Sentiment]
-
NZ and WI. Good honest teams, too frankly limited. Might spring a surprise in the Quaters or the Semis but they really don’t have enough to go all the way.
I’m in broad agreement with AK84’s comments above. However I think that any of these teams can win three in a row - which is all that’s needed after qualifying for the quarter finals.
I think AK84 is pretty accurate, although I don’t really rate Malinga as a good bowler. He has his moments- but also plenty of bad moments. Murali- well, of course he is effective and is a wicket taker- whether he is still as good remains open to doubt.
In a couple of hours Australia play Sri Lanka in a very important game for both sides- it will be a litmus test for Australia.
BTW - I got $4.60 about RSA winning the tournament and big betting Cicero plonked his $50 down.
I may be eating cat food for the rest of the year
One thing I find strange about this world cup is the programming. Australia will play two games in two weeks- far too long a break. Every time I switch the television on I seem to be watching San Marino or Andorra or someone getting thumped. I did take a lot of pleasure from seeing Ireland beat England …
Meanwhile I have the beer on ice for the game and will be a slob for a few hours.
Is it as much fun getting drunk when there’s no match to watch?
It could have been an absorbing game- shame about the rain.
It was a shame. I watched the first 8 or so overs, with Sangakkara starting to lead the recovery from the two early wickets. I thought Aussie looked pretty sharp from what I saw, certainly one of the leading contenders from my perspective.
An interesting pair of games tonight with England v South Africa and Ireland v India. I think Ireland have a better chance tonight than England to get a win. South Africa have looked sharp throughout and India lack the type of attack that shuts the associates out of the match.
South African Rejects are struggling against RSA. 45/3.
I liked that comment “Where do England players stay when they tour South Africa?”
Answer: “With their parents”.
171 to win - should be a walk in the park, although Swann could make things interesting.
The English effort was very disappointing. RSA should romp home.
Thats why they are SA Rejects.
Incidentally this will make Group B winner certain. Group A is between Pak and Aus (who am I kidding, its all Oz). We could see some strong teams playing each other in the QF’s. Say, India Australia or S Africa Sri Lanka.
Ireland start poorly - 9 for 2 after 2.3 overs.
South Africa on course for a crushing victory.
RSA are certainly making a tough job of it at the moment.
Excuse me. Got a dish of broad humble pie I have to eat.
