Crime and Punishment: or, the Eternal Suffering of Notre Dame

I hate Notre Dame because living 25 minutes from the stadium is pure hell. In addition to hearing coverage on my sports channels, I get a ton on local news as well. And the fans are obnoxious. And being so close to the campus, they are everywhere. We used to enjoy going out on game days for a few drinks and some wings, but the ‘fans’ have become so much that we can’t do that anymore, well we could, but who wants to deal with a bunch of shit? On game day the city is overrun with people who don’t know where they’re going, and it’s best to stay out of the city. Not to mention the politics of South Bend and Notre Dame in general.

I hate Notre Dame’s football because it’s been the most offensively and egregiously overrated team for the past 10 years (how does 0-9 for the past 9 years of bowl games sound?), because the school and football fans are staggeringly arrogant but without the performance to back it up (refusal to join a conference, etc.), and because–as others have mentioned–ND football has been a black hole of media whoring for way too damn long.

I hate Notre Dame as much as the next guy, but they’re not the only independent (football) team. Sportsline says that ND, Navy, Army, and Western Kentucky (who just jumped up to I-A) are also independent.

As a Buckeye, I can staunchly and definitively say that we in Big Ten country don’t want Notre Dame. Let them keep their NBC contract so hundreds of thousands (I bet they don’t reap an audience above 1mil) can see how atrocious they are.

Oh, and eff Charlie Weis too. Arrogant bastard with very little to back it up.

Labelless, your’s is a more personalized hate of ND than most. I wonder if you lived 25 minutes from Ohio Stadium in Columbus OH or 25 minutes from Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where the news coverage is just as incessant and the fans just numerous and as obnoxious, if you’d have similar hatred of Ohio State or Alabama?

Perhaps. I am affected a bit more than most, so that plays into it for sure. But honestly the fans don’t bother me nearly as much as the uni. and the team in general. The coaches have been polite, and a few of the players as well, but you always remember the arrogant ones.
We went to the Michigan ND tailgate last year, and Jim’s company hosted it, Jim and I were the only two in that tent that was rooting for Michigan, and we were generally given a ‘hard time’ by the people he works with, but thats to be expected.
But for the general atmosphere of the parking lot was a mixed one, and AFAIK there weren’t any fights, and everyone got along very well, and a good time was had by all.
I think every team has obnoxious fans, and ND has its share, you just have to give them a wider berth.

O - H!

I think it’s great to play Notre Dame. Every time you play them, you’re on national TV. For one week, everyone loves you and roots for you. What’s not to like?

At Michigan State, I’ve never seen any problems with the ND fans when they visit. From my exprerience the only people who come here and don’t want to have a good time but just want to be obnoxious are the Ohio State fans. Even the hated Michigan fans have better manners than them.

B-R-O-T-H-E-R…

Hmm…Why do i feel funny for agreeing with this? It feels like I have done something wrong.

I would hate to put you in the same category as residents of Berkeley – who moved next door to a football stadium, and then sued to prevent the Univ from making any improvements.

Amen.
I’m frankly surprised that, even at 0 and 4, they aren’t ranked somewhere in the middle of the Top 25 in the AP.

Yep, pretty much describes the Chicago Media.

I would never sue, that would be silly. I just try to stay away.
My main bitch is the City of South Bend constantly jerks Notre Dame off, but never wants to deal with the amount of jizz the university spews.

OK, too strong a word. Let me rephrase and say I didn’t think much of Devine for that, assuming the movie stated things accurately (and, it probably didn’t).

And you do bring up a point I hadn’t considered: Rudy may very well have done pretty well for himself with the ensuing fame from all that, so I don’t guess I need to feel like the guy got the short end of the stick.

OK, back to your regularly scheduled program…

Yep. There are regularly teams much more deserving of a larger bowl (and in that the larger payday) but an inferior Notre Dame team gets chosen for the ratings boost.

To be fair, there is no equity for anyone in bowl selections. Each conference has the favorite son schools and the redhaired stepsister schools. All things being equal, Michigan and Ohio State are going to get better bowls than Michigan State or Minnesota. Nebraska and Oklahoma get better bowls than Oklahoma State or Missouri. USC and UCLA get better bowls than California or Arizona. It’s just the way it is. The redhaired stepsister schools need to have significantly better records than the favorite son schools to get better rankings and better bowls. It’s all driven by money.

Well, uh…no. It’s driven by conference record. All things are very seldom equal: Michigan usually gets a better bowl than Minnesota because it has a better record.

Agreed BUT if there are ties in the conference standings than the fairhaired boys get the better bowls.

Records being equal, Michigan would inevitably get the better bowl.

ND always gets a better bowl than it deserves (and often it deserves none.)

I don’t get all the crying about Ty’s recruiting. As his players leave and Weis’s wunderkinds start to play shouldn’t they be getting better? I mean, with their recruiting they shouldn’t be playing like Temple even if they have a lot of youngsters. I think Charlie’s not all he’s cracked up to be and his recruiting classes are overrated; the best players want to go somewhere they can have a good supporting cast and win some games. Instead they’re getting egotists like Clauson.
