Since I ate some smoked trout earlier today, I have a distinct sensation of something stuck back in my throat that I can’t find with a finger nor swallow down. I did find in the remaining trout some tiny bones no thicker than a cat’s whisker and about 1/2" long.
Is this something I ought to see the doc about? It would have to be an emergency room visit, as it’s a holiday weekend. This seems like overkill for something so tiny, but the sensation is awfully annoying and uncomfortable.
As long as a person who feels like a fish bone is stuck in their throat is able to breath, swallow liquids and solids, is not in significant pain, and can talk ok, I generally recommend that they suck on a lemon. It will help dissolve the fish bone, stimulate peristaltsis, and make one pucker up as if for a kiss!
Many times, what feels like a foreign body in the esophagus is only an abrasion of the esophagus, causes by the body’s passing thru the esophagus. Other times however, it’s due to a foreign body.
I had that happen a few times when I was younger. It drove me crazy for hours on end but then just went away by itself. It doesn’t sound like you are any danger. An emergency tracheotomy can provide rapid relief if it gets too bad (hopsitals can do this for you too if you are squeamish).
This old wife agrees. It worked when I was a kid and had a salmon rib bone in my throat, and has worked with my own kids.
Bowing to Qadgop the Mercotan’s qualifiers as to whether it is an emergency/non-emergency situation, if not urgent, try to eat some soft white bread, it often help the bone go down.
You might get better results if you first ball up the bread in a dense little marble and swallow it whole. Not too big, mind – you don’t want to choke! Start real small and work up gradually in size if necessary.
Thanks for all the tips. After having eaten enough bread to make Atkins turn in his grave (with no results), I re-resorted to putting a finger down my throat. This time I was able to suppress the gag reflex and I found the bone a little below my right tonsil. I gently scratched at it with a clean index finger and either dislodged it or drove it completely into my throat tissue. Either way, it’s gone and the relief is incredible. A pox on smoked trout! I thought it came completely boned but I was wrong. I won’t make that mistake again in a hurry.
