I imagine Irwin must have said something like, “If I get attacked, I want 'em to keep filming” — meaning he’ll invariably survive the attack, and you can be damn sure he’s putting that footage on TV. (“Look at Agro chomping at my leg! He’s a naughty boy!”) Irwin took his share of bites and stings, but I still doubt very much he ever imagined he’d be killed on camera by a wild animal, particularly a croc (where he usually had an extensive backup team ready to jump in if he needed help).
As I said earlier, the footage belongs to the Discovery Channel. They would be foolish to show it over Terri’s objections, and if they don’t show it, there’s no point in keeping it. I assume once the police are done with it, Discovery will give it to Terri, who will either lock it in a vault or take it out to the backyard and torch it on the barbie.
A very touching hour. I liked when she described the early days of her marriage when she couldn’t understand Steve’s Aussie-isms. “‘Goodonyermate’? What is that? Do I have something on me?”
And she must be the only woman who would use the word “insectivorious” in describing her honeymoon.
I got a kick out of how she described the “test,” where Steve took her down on the river and she’s gushing about all the bugs in her hair and on her skin and how the bats were flying right in front of her to eat them and it was amazing!
I’d say that was a match made in heaven. Not many women would be thrilled about millions of bugs.
Okay yeah, I don’t need to see that. The Irwin family definitely doesn’t need to see that.
I caught the last half of the BW interview and found Terri strong and articulate and very open without cheaply exploiting the sentimental aspects of her loss. A real person who’s still trying to keep it together for her kids and who’s taking the responsibility of continuing her husband’s legacy (through the zoo, the relationship with Discovery, other outreach opportunities, etc.) very seriously.
I don’t think that footage will ever see the light of day. It’s nothing like the rather stupid Zapruder analogy. JFK was a homicide and part of a criminal investigation. Irwin’s death was simply a fluke of nature.
Assuming that he had expressed a wish to that effect, I still think that the survivor’s wishes should be honored. He’s dead. It won’t make a difference to him either way.
