"Croc Hunter footage won't air" say Terri.........

Bets on how long till its all over the web?

I give it a month, tops. I’m a little surprised it hasn’t leaked out yet. Maybe I don’t get off the board enough.

Belts? Why not buy pants that fit?

I’m glad it hasn’t leaked out, I mean, he did die and he does have little kids and a wife who shouldn’t have to watch that. Steve, mate, wherever you are now, rest in peace.

Apparently (no cite - heard via a friend) there isn’t actually any footage of the strike itself anyway, just shots from before it all happened.

My guess is that if the footage did exist, it would be all over the web by now anyway - not that I’d watch it.

It wouldn’t be that hard to keep it from leaking out — erase the tape.

What would be hard is keeping a copy of the tape but not releasing it.

Agreed; the only way to make sure it is never seen is to destroy it soon - while the number of copies can still be reasonably known.

The local news today was saying that there is video out there on youtube. I can’t get to youtube from work, but they were talking about it and how it was one of the most viewed on the site.

I just did a quick search of youtube and there are a number of videos purporting to be the genuine article; of the two I sampled, one was a simple jack-in-the-box screaming horror face, the other was a montage of archive footage of Irwin, ending with a scene where he pretends to have been bitten by something and falls over. I suspect the rest will be similar. If the real thing ever made it to Youtube, I don’t think it would last long anyway, because they just pull anything that is reported as problematic.

I heard some people say that Steve Irwin had stated at some point that if he bought the farm on tape that he wanted it shown. Did he really ever say that?

There are lots of videos on YouTube titled “Steve Irwin Death Video” or something similar. All of them are spam that do not contain the actual video. I don not doubt they are among the most viewed, as many people have a morbid curiosity about such things.

The footage exists. It was impounded by the police for their investigation into Irwin’s death, and Irwin’s producer, John Stainton, has seen it. Presumably it belongs to Discovery Networks, and will sit in their vaults unless they do the decent thing and give it to Terry (who most likely would destroy it).

I thought I remembered reading an Irwin quote in which he said something along the lines of: “I hope that if I’m ever eaten by a croc that there’s someone there, filming the whole thing.” If it’s a legitimate quote, it seems like it would have been his wishes that the video be aired.

I saw a quote from him about how disturbing the footage is. I can’t seem to find it now. It strongly implied that the entire incident was taped.

The way I remember the quote is that if an incident were to occur, that filming was not to stop… nothing to do with wether or not it got aired.

Stainton has seen it and apparently the footage does show the death.

I heard somewhere that the police have it for investigative purposes, and that it will be destroyed.

Good. It’s tragic enough that he left a young wife and children behind, the rest of the world does not need to ogle at the death scene.

Its the Australian “Zapruder Film”! I can’t imagine anyone would be foolish enough to destroy it. Thats why I think it will eventually see the light of day.

I hear it shows a second stingray hidden behind a seaweedy knoll.

What’s the point of taping something unless you want other people to see it? I should think that it’s sort of implied.

Don’t get me wrong-- I have absolutely no interest in watching this tape but if that’s what Irwin wanted, I don’t see any reason why it should be locked away in a vault or destroyed.

Why should it be aired? Especially against the wishes of his wife? If she doesn’t want it aired then put it in a vault or destroy it. In this kind of situation, I can think of no good reason to air it.

Doesn’t mean that it has to be aired, though. Or distributed on the Internet.

Well, that’s a Great Debate in of itself. Whose wishes should take priority, the deceased’s or the survivors? If Irwin really did want footage of his demise to be filmed and aired (which I’m not saying is the case-- I can’t remember the quote, so I’m just exploring the possibilities) is it disrespectful for his widow to refuse to do so? When do we follow our loved ones’ wishes and when do we decline?
