Croc Hunter

for what it’s worth, here’s his website (as if you couldn’t guess it!)

Steve is generally ‘reckless’ only with species he knows. If you watch him a lot you realize that he isn’t quite as foolhardy as he comes across. Also, I believe that he does have a formal degree in herpitology, because he has be refered to as being a herpitologist a number of times.

Awww. Shucks. ‘Twarnt nothin’ ma’am. (This sentence nomitated for most overuse of the apostrohpe)

Has anyone else seen the episode that tells his life story? The part where he and his wife met, fell in love, and married cracked me up. I’ll see what I can remember:

She was working at a zoo in Oregon and went on a trip to Aussieland with some friends. While there, they went to this little out of the way zoo and saw this guy playing with crocs like puppies. She said that her first thought was that he had to be taken already. When she found out he wasn’t, she said goodbye to her friends and signed on as a volunteer at the zoo, just like that. He said it was love at first sight. Then they got married in the US. There was no video, but I’m pretty sure he wore his kakhis for that, too :). On their way out of the church, he got a call from a friend back home saying he needed help catching a croc. So they spent their honeymoon in the outback chasing reptiles. With a camera crew. They showed a clip of her discovering a very large highly venomous snake in the latrine area. She was screaming with a roll of TP in her hand and her pants half down. Very funny.

Anyway, I no longer feel sorry for her the way I used to. She’s easily just as nuts as he is.

I asked an Australian friend this a while ago, and he confirmed that Croc Hunter is on the air in Australia. I enjoy the show for the reasons previously mentioned, although I don’t watch it regularly. Anyone see the episode where some…thing…bit Steve’s hand and he couldn’t get it loose? Terri was trying to pry the lizard’s mouth open, it was really funny in a terrible way.

Also freaky: episodes about the hideous poisonous spiders lurking in backyards in suburban Australia. Makes me want to avoid the place entirely.

He was kidding- the small snake turned out to be non-poisonous. However, I think it’s interesting to note that he, (self-proclaimed reptile expert that he is,) still had to look it up to be sure. Note- he handled the snake BEFORE he knew for certain it wasn’t poisonous…

Steve’s apparently quite controversial in herpetology and conservationist circles. There are quite a few who feel that his actively trying to get people interested in the animals is doing more harm than good. Personally I disagree, but that’s just IMHO.

My personal favorite saying of his, I think is, “She’s got a cute little bottom, just like my wife!”

Another tidbit for those new to the CH phenom… Terri is recently a mother, (in the last 2 years- not sure of the d.o.b.) and they named their daughter Bindy-Sue… After their favorite croc, and their dog.

Yep, sompthin’ 'bout that boy jest ain’t right…
