Crossword puzzle clues

GSGE…9,4

COOL BALL?..8,3
Any Ideas?

First one would be ‘scrambled eggs’?
Would the second one be ‘snowball’?

The first one might be ‘reddwarfstar’, rather than snowball. :smack:

Too many letters.

1st one is Scrambled Eggs ::applauds nonacetone
2nd is Football Fan

“Ball cooler?” would make more sense than “cool ball”, then. Bad form to have “ball” in both the clue and the answer, though.

Maybe so but this is The Daily Telegraph Crytic Xword book and it’s very well known for its little quirks

cool ball= ice sicle?

(Part of the confusion here might be that in the USA, crosswords don’t usually come with clues as to the number of letters in each word of the answer, as they often do in the UK. )

They don’t?

To the best of my knowledge all UK Xword puzzles give the number of letters in the answer.

Not doing this would, I think, make the puzzle a hell of a lot harder to solve.

The rare US cryptic puzzles do - but puzzles in US newspapers are non-cryptic, and by convention don’t even give the number of words for multiword answers.

Doing UK cryptics is very frustrating because of my lack of local dialect. I might get the first of your clues, but never the second. American ootballs are not really balls here. Cryptics set by US people I can handle fine.
