Crowning moments of awesome in rock

Four Words…

HEY HO! LET’S GO!

Faith No More with Falling to Pieces. Mike Patton in a clown suit. What more do you need?

THere is a video on Youtube from one of the Woodstocks in the 90’s:

Just as they are about to start James says “We are Metallica… And this is what we do best Motherfuckers!!” and just then they launch into the intro. It is a perfect moment of rock.

Hopefully you don’t need a facebook account to see it, but…
This picture completely defines rock 'n roll. That’s a moment.

I always thought it was this one that defined rock and roll (even though Cash was mostly a country boy).

The start of ‘this fire’ by KillSwitch Engage. So full of energy it’s awesome.
It gets even better when the verse kicks in.

Guns N’ Roses - Paradise City. at 4.50 of the song they speed things up, and Slash starts playing a solo in the background that reaches it crescendo when Axl shuts up at 6.00
Everything builds up to this moment. I always eagerly await that little part and call it Slash’s orgasm.

My favorite moment of awesome has to be Pearl Jam’s rearviewmirror. The album version has it but obviously it’s much better live when they extend the break in the middle, just jamming a little. And then at some point the bass starts playing a riff, and you KNOW shit’s picking up again.

There’s many more moments in music that are awesome. These 3 came to mind first.

Not necessarily “rock and roll”, but I would say that this photo defines guitar-based nihilism.

Not bad, but Pete Townshend did it first.

Too late to edit: And of course Townshend also ruined guitars probably worth more than my yearly income before Paul Simonon smashed his bass (but it’s one of the greatest album covers nonetheless). He is the undisputed king of guitar abuse.

I believe the Electric Dylan Controversy with the release of his Bringing It All Back Home album with “Like a Rolling Stone” and subsequent appearance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, has to be one of the greatest crowning moments of rock.

Here’s the image that I like: This guitar has seconds to live.

Another great guitar-bashing moment: Richie Blackmore at California Jam

Is it possible to identify the song/moment that marked when the “roll” was dropped from rock ‘n’ roll?

Probably not. I think “Money (That’s What I Want)” is hard rock, and it was originally recorded by Barrett Strong in 1959… in fact it was the first hit for Tamla/Motown. Well before the term “rock ‘n’ roll” was replaced by “rock”.

I thought it was going to bethe amazing concert where, at the same point, it shifts over to Van Morrison and The Band. Man, what a set of pipes, and fits the psychosis of the song.

Speaking of Van, I agree that Caravan is a crowning moment, made doubly so when I brought home the first LP I ever bought (Moondance), and Crazy Love lulled me into bliss and then suddenly “Therrrre’s a Carrravannnn…” How the hell can someone growl in a tenor range? It is indeed a gift.

Bringing it all Back Home is an awesome album, but Like a Rolling Stone is on Highway 61 Revisited.

Still a crowning moment. Denyce Graves’ triuphant finish to Habanera: Denyce Graves sings the Habanera from Carmen - YouTube
