Cryptic comments in a Reagan speech

OK, my uncle Jay, who is rather conspiracy-minded, related a story to me, and I’m skeptical, to say the least. But let’s just see if we can get some confirmation here.

According to him, he was watching the “1989 State of the Union speech” delivered by Ronald Reagan (OK, as it turns out, the '89 speech was delivered by Bush, and I told him that, and he said he might have been mistaken on the year, but at any rate he believes it was a State of the Union address by Reagan), and Reagan briefly made some cryptic comments about “structures on the moon,” including “domes and pyramids.” I’m quoting my uncle here, not the speech, which I’ve not been able to find anywhere. In fact, I’ve found transcripts of every Reagan State of the Union address, and there are only passing references to the moon, most of them involving the American triumph of the moon landing.

Now, Jay is a regular Art Bell listener, and he’s supposedly heard other people who heard the same supposed comments. In fact, he tells me that both he and my grandfather heard these comments and talked about them, and they were so amazed that such weird things had been said by the President on national TV that they immediately tried to find a transcript of the speech in the local paper. And of course, the conspiracy mindset takes hold here, as Jay asserts that “up until that time, the paper printed a complete transcript of the the State of the Union speech, but that year they stopped.”

Well, it seemed to me that a quick internet search could sort this out, because after all, the place is filled with conspiracy nuts. But for some reason, this particular conspiracy doesn’t seem to be well documented, and I’m beginning to wonder if maybe Jay imagined or dreamed the whole thing. There are some comments made by Reagan at a UN speech where he talked about perhaps if an alien menace were threatening the earth, it might serve to unite all of mankind. But as for “structures on the moon,” I haven’t found a single website devoted to exposing that particular conspiracy.

Does anybody else remember anything like this? At this point I’m not even going so far as to look for videotape evidence, I’m just trying to find out if anybody has even heard of this. Maybe it wasn’t a State of the Union speech, maybe it was something else…? If it happened, that is. (I have a hard time believing that Reagan made comments like this without the Democratic Party, or the press for that matter, making a very big deal about it.)

A quick google came up with this:

It’s nothing like what your uncle asserts, but I can see how the above might get horribly exaggerated and twisted by way of Chinese Whispers.

If he actually said this, it still doesn’t mean anything. I’ve seen Reagan use metaphors with my very own eyes. He did, I tell ya!

You should learn to immediately discount anything an Art Bell listener claims as fact. If an Art Bell listener says the sky is blue, you should look out the window anyway. Reagan said this during a speech at the 42nd session of the General General Assembly of the United Nations, on September 21, 1987:

OOoooooOH! Spooky aliens among us building pyramids and probing our anuses and Reagan knew it! Your uncle is a kook. Oh by the way, here’s a link to all of Reagan’s SOTU speeches:Portrait of Ronald Reagan I’m sure government agents have edited out all references to aliens and moon bases.

Yeah, that’s the same thing I found in my internet search. I basically ran “Reagan” and “speech” and “moon” through Google and came up with that same link. It wasn’t helpful, from my perspective. I just mentioned it as a lead that went nowhere.

What I’m looking for is either, one, some confirmation of comments by Reagan about structures on the moon, or two, some confirmably false accusation made by a specific conspiracy nut about Reagan making such comments.

Ditto the above re: alien threat. It’s probably been conflated with the folloing bit of conspiracy lore, re: Apollo 11:

I’m sure that more than one person in the history of the planet has been named Otto Binder…

But for the record, Otto Binder was one-half (with his brother) of a well-known and highly-regarded sci-fi author of the 30’s and 40’s known as Eando Binder.

Otto himself was a regular writer for Superman comic books in the 1960’s. And I doubt he had anything to do with all this.

Given that Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, and that Reagan was more than likely suffering some ill effects long before he was diagnosed, I’m more surprised that there weren’t more cryptic comments in his speeches.
