Cultural opinions of belly dancing as a career

We were watching a belly dancer tonight and I got to wondering about the opinions of friends, family and society on belly dancers. Not in the United States but in nations where it is more common such as Egypt. If you are a parent and your daughter announces her plans to become a belly dancer, is the reaction anger, pride, no feelings beyond “it’s a job” or a mixture? How is the occupation viewed overall by society?

This is in general questions because it’s a question about opinions, not an attempt to gain personal opinions on it. If it’s in the wrong place, please move it.

Last I head, Egypt was “cracking down” on belly dancers and a lot of the art is being lost.

One of my SOs in times past was Iranian/Turkish. She told me that it was something like a performing art that is similar to a musician here in America, i.e., you have the kids come out and perform for friends that haven’t seen them. Don’t know about professionally, tho. (As a matter of fact, I don’t know if she was jerking my chain or not.)
