Being in the SCA I have tried it. Most salty than fishy, but even tho Worcestershire sauce also has a base of anchovies , Garum does taste somewhat fishy. Lots of Unami.

I’m fond of a British condiment called “The Gentleman’s Relish”, which consists of anchovy paste and butter mixed with a secret spice blend. It’s meant to be spread very thin on toast and served with scrambled eggs.
It’s salty and extremely fishy, but it adds a lot of flavor, and I bet you could substitute it for Worcestershire sauce in a lot of dishes without anyone noticing.
Kinda sounds a bit like Marmite, eh? Or vegemite?
That’s anchovy paste for ya. Still, I’ve never heard of this intriguing spread and it’s added to the list. Is it refrigerated?
