Cure for cold sores?

Campho-Phinque

I always get 2 or 3 cold sores in the winter, and this stuff clears them up in 3 or 4 days. It’s over the counter and not more than $5.

No kisses or blowjobs? Are you MAD?!?!

I had a friend who ended up getting cold sores because she gave a guy who had herpes – who had not told her! – a blow job. Her doc said it was the same virus. She was not happy.

Yep. That’ll happen. To make it worse, once you have cold sores, the virus never goes away. It’ll go dormant now and again, but you’ll have breakouts for the rest of your life. None of the antivirals out there that treat outbreaks will do anything for the underlying infection.

Also, make sure you throw away your toothbrush and scrape off a good portion of your lipsticks, if that applies to you. I’ve always relied upon Blistex and hydrogen peroxide.

I haven’t done drag in years, darling, but I’ll keep that in mind.

When I get those kanker sores I use OJ, no not Simpson. I put the OJ over the sore and let it sit, burns like hell but it usually gets rid of them in a few days. I try and do it twice a day for a few days.

An odd cure, that works…

I get cold sores once in a blue moon, like every few years. I have used Zovirax, but you have to be so quick or it is useless. No good if you rarely get them!

I read that you could effect a cure:
Put a teaspoon into a mug of hot tea as soon as you feel the first tingle, then put the flat of the spoon against the itchy bit, hold there as long as you can stand the pain. Remove and repeat a couple of times.

It does work! From what I remember the virus is heat sensitive. The heat destroys the virus and cures the sore. It does not work once the thing is established but it works for me.

I would never use it on my genitals though, that might be tooo much!

I second that! I too use this. But I use the liquid campho-phenique and put it on with a Q-Tip about 3 times a day and once before you go to bed. It dries them up in no time.

canker sores (mouth ulcers in this part of the world) and cold sores AREN’T related.

you need acyclovir or another anti viral agent to knock out the cold sore attacks.

you’ll need to boost your immune system, so take your vits (especially B12, B6 and C ) and maybe some echinacea or pro-biotics.
personally i get mouth ulcers in relation to my hormone levels (esprix, honey, i’m pretty sure that doesn’t apply to you) and i use chlorhexidine gluconate and hexitidine mouth washes to get rid of mine.

the best EVER treatment for them is this sort of minging red liquid that comes in little glass vials and is applied with Q-tips. it dries to form a shell and stings like crazy, but REALLY works.
unfortunately it’s name escapes me.

i believe Apthasol is available in the US for mouth ulcers and is considered very good.

there is a possibility that you have a Staph Aureus infection on your lip, in which case you’ll need antibiotics and a culture.

any how, hi thee hence to a doctor and get a script for acyclovir, famvir or something similar.

good luck eradicating the little beastie!

It’s a virus and nothing really works 100%…there IS NO cure, not yet anyway. I’ve had “fever blisters” since childhood. The doc said when I was a baby somebody w/ one probably kissed me and I’ve gotten them from time to time ever since.

I’ve tried everything, if you’ll take a Lysine everyday it’ll keep’em away. I’m not that disciplined though, so when I feel one coming, I’ll double up on them. I keep a small jar of medex, (a type of carmex) mixed w/ a touch of oragel and vit.E

This works pretty good for me. If you get one unexpectedly and need it to dry up quick, a little table salt on the blister will do it.

p.s. it’s gonna sting a little…

You can save some $ by just getting a small bottle of camphor oil. It’s less than a dollar and does the same thing. It very quickly dries out the cold sore which speeds up healing.

The general theme here is “dry them up,” whereas I figured the proper course would have been “keep them moist,” especially since when it’s dry, if I open my mouth they crack open. (Ow!)

I tried a little rubbing alcohol last night, so we’ll see if that helps.

Thanks for all your advice! I’ll let you know what works.

Just remember, (and I swear I’d say this gay, straight or whatever) as mentioned you can spread that “down there” which you’ve already acknoledged, but you could also spread it “down there” without an open sore on your mouth…it’s called viral shedding and it can happen. Rare though. Just FYI. So, especially if you have a ‘tingle’ (not necessarily a sign of viral shedding but can be a sign of a sore developing) that you steer way clear of “down there” with your mouth.

Your concern is duly noted, but safe sex is my bidniss.

I know Mr. Esprix…just wanted to mention 'cause some folks don’t…

Hope it heals soon…owch!

The best is Denavir. Like Zovirax, but formulated specifically for the facial/cold sore version of the virus. Very effective if used at the first indication of symptoms. Ridiculously expensive (some places charge $100 for 1.5g of cream in a tiny tube). If you look around you might find it for under $40. A tube will last through many cold sores.

Cold sore tip of the day: SUNSCREEN!!! Always, always use sunscreen on your lips.

Well the only thing I could find locally over-the-counter was Orajel mouth sore medicine (for both kanker and cold sores). So far it certainly makes it feel better (I’m in that period where the blisters are gone, but my lips keep cracking like they’re chapped), but we’ll see if it hastens the end to my torment.

Oh, and I understand* Ghiradelli caramel-filled chocolate squares are really, really good for all that ills ya, so I’m taking several of those orally every hour.

[sub]* Or maybe I just made that up. [/sub]

That’s what I use on mine. I get them on the left corner of my mouth every now and then. Rignt now the most recent one is drying up and going away. It takes about a week with the Orajel treatment.

WARNING: Do not lick your lips when you put the Orajel on. Numb tongue is not fun.
