cure for my dog's bad habit?

Our dog is 15 weeks old. This week she’s started “leaking” urine when she gets excited (when we come home or when someone comes to the door). I don’t think it’s that she really needs to go because the two times she did it today, she had been outside to “use the facilities” not too long before she did it.
What causes this? How can we make this stop? Is this something she’ll outgrow? Help!

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I can suggest a resource: The Dog Owners’ Guide. I have found this site very helpful.

I think that puppies have a hard time, um, “controlling their excitement” a lot of the time. She probably doesn’t even realize what she’s doing.

One thing to keep in mind. If she continues to “leak” as she gets older, talk to your vet. When our dog was a few years old (not a puppy, but not elderly, either), she started leaving little puddles for us. She had no idea that she was doing it (trust me, we just knew that). So on the next vet visit, we mentioned it. Turns out she’s incontinent.

She takes a pill for it, no problem.

C3- A buddy of mine had a similar problem with his puppy. The vet called it “submissive wetting” and said he’d grow out of it eventually. The muscles for bladder control apparently don’t fully mature til the dog gets older (6 months, 8 months?).

In the meantime, when you (alpha dog, as it were) come home, pup gets all excited and wets at your appearance. Think of it as a sign of respect!

My buddy’s temporary solution was to (I’m not kidding) sneak up to the house, unlock the door as quietly as possible, and then reach in and snatch the dog out of the house into the carport before puppy could get really worked up. Apparently the surprise factor overwhelmed the submissive wetting for a few seconds. I think his wife smacked him silly when she found out about it, but you may have better luck.

Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

Sparky did that when he was a puppy too. It’s annoying, but they grow out of it

I have over 2000 posts, dammit! Show some respect.

Thanks for the replies! Green Bean, that’s a great site; I added it to my favorites.
I guess we’ll just let her get a bit older and then consult the vet if it’s still going on…I’m just glad someone else posted a topic about mopping hardwood floors.

It sounds like your puppy gets too excited when greeting you. Try ignoring her when you come in the door, just for a few minutes until she calms down. Just do your thing, like she is not there, don’t even look at her, then after she is calmer - pet her and do the “good girl” thing, and everything else you do when greeting her.

This will not work overnight, but over a week or so you should see some improvement.
Good Luck!

Our puppy did this, too. Just caution your friends and neighbors when they come to greet the dog! And, don’t worry…the dog will outgrow this.
