current godawful comic strips

Well, we needed the yin to the yang.

Start nominating the baddies, folks.

As for the newspaper, I can’t stand the Lockhorns. Didn’t those jokes get old about 60 years ago? Mutts is another one I never liked, especially because it replaced Outland, which was my all-time favorite newspaper strip.

Online, there are possibly billions of bad comics. There’s a Portal of Evil directory on them.

There’s simply nothing worse than “The Family Circus.”

Some are so bad now I can’t even remember their names. There’s one with a computer hacker and his cat and his dog. It’s awful.

It’s far easier to name the good ones. You start naming the bad ones and next thng you know you’ve died from hunger. Newspaper strips are uniformly sanitized, since they have to be inoffensive to everyone from 8 to 80. Internet strips can be created by anyone - and are. And many of them, to rebel against the sanitary newspaper strips, try to be offensive and end up just stupid, except to people who think bodily fluids are just riotously hilarious.

Actual true wit is in short supply in this medium.

I believe you’re referring to “Get Fuzzy,” and yes, it is horrible.

I also hate “Fred Basset.” “Mixed Media” was never funny. “Bound and Gagged” sucks. “Blondie” seems to use the same jokes over and over. I haven’t even bothered with “Hi and Lois” in over five years because I hate it so much. There are a few new ones, “James” and “Agnes,” and those are crap as well.

I don’t understand the popularity “Garfield” has enjoyed. I’ve never found him funny.
Where have all the Gary Larsons and Bill Wattersons gone?

I used to like Garfield, but now it’s the same stupid comics over and over:

*Conversations and ultimate killings of the different spiders in Garfield’s house.
*How John is a dateless wonder.
*How, if John can get a date, the date hates him.
*Garfield hates Odie.
*Jon is pitiful.
*Garfield is lazy.

Whatever happened to Garfield’s bear? Or the grey kitty (her name started with an ‘N’–Nurfle? Nurble? Ah, I forget)that used to annoy the hell out of Garfield?

Marmaduke also gets old. There’s only so many ways you can tell your audience how big Marmaduke is.

Nermal, the world’s cuuuuutest kitty cat.
The bear’s name is Pokey.

And I agree. Garfield used to be alright. It’s gotten steadily worse over the years. Garfield could have been great, but was over commercialized and is way past its prime.

Actually, wasn’t it Pookie?

Screw Bill Watterson. Fuck Gary Larson. Whatever happened to Walt Kelly and Al Capp? Oh yeah, they’re dead.

It makes me ill to see reruns of the Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes running in the daily paper. I only thought they were moderately good when they first ran, and now every day I see these reanimated corpses drudging across the page, exclaiming “we’ve been dead for ten years, and this is still the best comics you’re gonna get here! Nothing published since even rises to the few notches we’ve carved out above the usual swamp of utter mediocrity!” Whatever enjoyment I originally got out of these strips has long since been leached away. It’s like I’m hearing a popular song that I kind of enjoyed in high school, but now I’m hearing it on oldies stations constantly to the point that it makes me sick.

At least Bloom County had the decency to stay dead, so that I can still look back at it fondly.

Oh my God, I couldn’t agree more! I absolutely loathe ** Family Circus**. I hate a lot of comics though. I can’t even read Cathy or For Better or For Worse without getting angry.

Has anyone else heard of Zippy? That comic is such a piece of crap. It never makes sense! NEVER!! Plus, I can’t recall it ever having a punch line. Same with Night Lights and Pillow Fights. All it seems to be about is a Jesus-loving cat.
~Kittie

B.C. is lots, lots worse than anything any of you have mentioned here.
Not only is it unfunny, it’s Fundy preaching can enrage me.
And I don’t go to the comic strip section to be enraged!!!

On one of his “better” days, Johnny Hart can make me so pissed-off that I feel physically ill.

I agree. B.C, Blondie, Beatle Bailey, Hagar the Horrible–I get sick of comics that rely on stupid puns. I like comics with story lines or at least some action.

I think you’re right … checks one of the numerous Garfield books on his shelf-o-many-volumes … you’re right. My bad.

(I’m starting to feel like I’m on a mission, here.)

For all those Family Circus “fans”, I bring you the antidote:
The Dysfunctional Family Circus. Living proof that something so bad can produce something so sweet.

Marmaduke makes me squirm, so I try to skip over it.
Also, the rehashed Peanuts is lame.

I am a dog person, but Marmaduke is not funny at all. The Sunday comic was a little amusing, but the dailies are truly the pits.

But your post also reminded me: didn’t the Universal Press syndicate say that they were going to release “classic peanuts” only for a year after Schulz’s death? I think many papers are continuing with peanuts so the creator must be rolling in his grave.

Oh. My. God.

Disfunctional Family Circus…HA HAHAHAHAHAH!!!

Oh my god…I haven’t laughed so hard since Bronze Lion’s thread.

Ah, Guin, you made my day. I live solely to bring joy to others. :D:D:D:D

steps up to microphone
cough

Sylvia. That is all.

walks away

Andy Capp. Andy Capp is terrible.

Just once I’d like to see her under her boss’s desk giving him a hummer, or visit the daughter in the hospital after a botched abortion, or maybe sally’s co-workers could out her husband…

But that’s just me.
