current godawful comic strips

I totally agree about “rose is rose”. that’s another one I always end up reading even though i hate it. For some reason the ones where the wife is shown projecting herself as a little kid( or as a bad ass biker chick) make me want to gouge out my eyes with a pair of blunt safety scissors. Cathy i can deal with though, but only because i have an aunt that acts exactly like her.

currently drunk but not really bitter

Am I actually the first one to say that “Mulch” is an awful strip? It’s the one where the title character is a gardener in a wheelchair?

A friend once said, “I like Rose (from Rose is Rose) because she has a past.”

“A past?”

“Yeah, the biker chick.”

“That’s her fantasy. Or her alter ego.”

“No, she really used to be a biker chick.”

“And now she’s a soccer mom? When was this explicitly stated?”

“I don’t remember.”

I’d have to go through all the collections to prove or disprove this, and I’d rather not. But the only way a former biker chick would live her life as Rose does would be if she got a head injury that caused a complete personality change.

Hey, maybe she did! Maybe she lost her memory as well, and her subconscious keeps trying to tell her to give up the milk and afghans and get back in the game!

Oh, but lest you forget, anyone messing with Pasquale would have his guardian angel to reckon with.

Man, I’m glad somebody else thinks that strip sucks as much as I do! I was afraid I would come off as a bitter old man. (although I’m 20.)

On the Fast Track. For those of you who haven’t heard of it, it’s workplace and computer “humor”. The cartoonist seems to have focused on the theme “Wouldn’t it be funny if I took something literally that was meant to be figurative.” So, for example, the “year 2000 bug” is an actual bug that infests computers and eats data. The main character has a “work side” and a “domestic side”, and both of these are actual people who she turns into. I’m only scratching the surface of the badness that is “On the Fast Track”, but it’s bad.

I don’t read On the Fasttrack, but the cartoonist Bill Holbrook also does the online strip Kevin and Kell, and that is a very good read. Give it a shot – it’s one of the few web comics that are actually well-drawn…

What drugs are you on? Get Fuzzy is one of the best strips in the lot at the moment.

[sub]Of course, it helps if you happen to live with Satchel…[/sub]

Ugh. Another person with no taste (or too much testosterone).

I’ve seen it…didn’t like it. Holbrook seems to rely too much on gimmicks for me. “Let’s take a modern company, and we make all the workers there predators of some sort, and just for fun, we have our main character married to prey, and she has to pretend he’s a predator.” I just don’t think he’s funny.

No one’s ever going to accuse me of having too much testosterone. But I hate Sylvia. I want to shake the cartoonist until she learns how to draw speech bubbles.

How about Snuffy Smith. The creator died years ago but someone actually took his place. Like there’d be some huge outcry if it ended. (What the hell is that black thing on the wife’s head? Looks like she’s being strangled by a mutant apostrophe.)

I think the idea that every strip should be appropriate for children has killed the medium. I remember in the mid-80s my (then) local paper cancelled Doonesbury during the “Duke is a zombie” series because some 98-year-olds thought it was promoting witchcraft!

Anyway, as already pointed out, all the cool kids know that the best strips are online.

Shrug I don’t really notice the gimmicks myself – I just enjoy the way he builds multi-faceted characters (with Real Personality in every box), and makes them interact with each other in interesting and unpredictable ways. Might’ve worked for me because I went through the entire archives in one afternoon…

As for the OP, did I mention Close to Home and Agnes already? I did? Well, I’ll mention them again, since they still stink!

I can’t believe no one has mentioned Nancy

Death to ZIGGY!

For good comix, go to http://www.libertymeadows.com (ahh, critters and cheesecake…life is good) and http://www.spaceagecomics.com (especially any recently-graduated Univ. of TX Dopers)

I’ve got one for you. It’s not overly sweet like “Family Circus,” it’s not running on despite the death of it’s creator like “Peanuts,” the jokes aren’t over-used like “Garfield.” In fact, there are no jokes at all. At least so far as I can tell. I read it every so often just on the off-chance that it will contain some shred of humor. I am convinced that it goes against the odds for something to be this bad all the time. Get ready for…

…drumroll please…
