Cuttings in sun or shade?

When you take cuttings off shrubs/trees do you put them in sun or shade?

It seems I’d want something shady so that they focus on root development instead of foliage, but plants need light for energy.

Any other tips on increasing the odds that your cuttings take root? I never have much luck with it. I do soak them in water, and then use rooting compound.

From a recent trip to a dude’s backyard, I’ve got a musk oak, a weird maple, European olive, Japanese maple, and Korean hornbeam.

While we’re at it, wasn’t Hornbeam the name of an Ent?

I’d say shade since you want to minimize transpiration (you could also snip the leaves to minimize it).

If you have some time could slice some strips of bark off the trunk (or larger branch) pack it with damn peat moss and enclose with a plastic bag. Come back some weeks later and you’ll find a root system emerging from the bark free sections. Remove from main trunk/branch and you’ve got a new tree.

And I think it was Quickbeam, not Hornbeam.

Good idea. I’m going to pack it with some damn peat moss.

Do you think I should keep that peat moss a little moist?

Damn moss…Damp moss… who wouldn’t make that mistake.

Actually what I was describing is called layering. Sorry about that.
