Cyclone Monica now heading straight for Darwin

Monica, this season’s latest cyclone, is headed for Darwin. And it looks like she’ll be worse than Tracy was in 1974. Things must be bad if tomorrow’s Anzac Day commemorations have been cancelled.

That was my thought! If the ANZAC day commemorations are cancelled it can’t be good.

Good Luck Darwin.

And Lest They Be Forgotten, to all the ANZACs.

I don’t know about you Cunctator but ANZAC day makes me feel sad and proud and sad all over.

I lived in Canberra when Tracy hit. That was Christmas Eve. Today is April 24, four months later. Is this unusual for the cyclone season to be that long, or was Tracy unusually early in the season? I don’t remember.

Reading the Aussie sites about Monica, there is a lot of talk about the storms intensity as measured by barometric pressure. We almost never hear that referenced in the U.S. anymore. It’s all about wind speed. When did we drop the references to pressure? I remember when weather maps in the U.S. newspapers had the pressure gradients on them.

Damn, that is a monster storm. Stay safe, people!

Take cover, Aussie Members!

That goes for the Lurkers Down Under, too.
<worried>

I just heard on the news that Monica’s pressure was now lower than any hurricane ever measured in the Atlantic.

Geez.

Good luck, Darwin. I hope y’all come through it OK.

LM, Katrina coverage spoke of pressure quite a bit. Maybe it’s the news sites you’re using.

Take cover, guys. Be safe.

Speaking of wind speed, that same news report I referred to earlier stated a sustained eyewall wind speed of 178 miles per hour.

Duck and cover.

Good news (ish). After hitting land, Monica has been downgraded to Category 2 (from 5). She’ll also pass south of Darwin - they’re still in for a bumpy ride, but hopefully, it won’t be as bad as first predicted…

Thank goodness! Still, I hope everyone comes out safe and sound.

There’s a Lewinski joke in here somewhere.
