Dabney Coleman dies

I can’t believe he was 92!

I wasn’t aware he did so much work in minor roles that I actually remember. A really good run. RIP Dabney.

What are the iconic “bad bosses” in movies?

Dabney Coleman in 9-5

Gary Cole in Office Space

Side note: As a kid, I mixed up Dabney Coleman and Gerald McRaney. the mustache, I guess?

And definitely the voice. I made that mistake the few times I watched NCIS: Los Angeles.

He has a small part (maybe 1 minute) near the end of Towering Inferno and he is such a dick.

I liked it when he strangled his cheating wife and tried to frame her boyfriend on Columbo.

RIP, Dabney!

Always fun.

Who’s going to run Bait Magazine now?

I knew he was around because I was surprised to see him playing “The Commodore” on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire a decade ago, but I hadn’t seen him in anything since. According to imdb, though, he’s been busy, even appearing in Yellowstone.

I remember him from a lot of things, but one that stood out to me as a kid was Cloak and Dagger - instead of playing a weasel, as he usually does, he played a dual role - a brave (and fictional) secret agent, and a heroic father to the main character (a young boy).

As a kid he was a terrifically warm and comforting presence in a fun kids movie that I recall was unusually violent (for a kids movie).

I always thought of Coleman is Discount Gene Hackman.

Stranger

I came here to mention the same thing. He was great as the Commodore and I remember being (pleasantly) surprised he was still alive and also thinking that would be his last role. He was great in every role, with my second favorite being the chauvinist director in Tootsie. RIP.

I don’t want to think about the fact that 9 to 5 was released forty-three years ago.

So where were Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton on Thursday? Maybe they finally succeeded.

Wait, I’m about the same age now as that horrible boss was in 9 to 5?

I need a breather.

  1. It is interesting they are all alive. And thank God, especially Dolly is so fantastic.

  2. They didn’t need him to die. They defeated him in the movie.

I will also remember how well he played the downtrodden, beaten-down, meek guy in 9 to 5 fantasy sequence.

Not only alive, but they’re all active and working. That’s pretty amazing.

I really like him in War Games. He played it perfectly. RIP.

I didn’t really remember him in war games. Now, Barry Corbin I remember, but not Coleman.
