Dad and Kids Movie Watch List

Handle? Yes. Enjoy? You might lose them in the slow parts. I know myself that I fast forward through some of the more boring scenes, but then again, I’ve read the books and seen the movies, so I already know what’s happening.

We talked about this kind of stuff in another thread that Not Carlson started last November. His children are about the same age (11 and 14), but the older child is a girl, if that makes any difference.

Have they seen The Princess Bride yet? What about the Back to the Future trilogy?

Emperor’s Teeth, Darren! You were in that other thread, and you left off Nausicaa?!?

Also, even though they aren’t his characters (but then again, neither are Arietty or Howl), bringing up Miyazaki should also suggest Lupin III and the Castle of Cagliostro, which is still my favourite animated film despite its being over 35 years old. Depending on which translation you get, some of the language might be a tad spicy for a 10-year-old.

The Heroes of Telemark

It’s on RIGHT NOW!

Atlantis The Lost Empire
Laputa Castle in the Sky
Galaxy Quest
The Fifth Element

By the time my son was 10, we started including action thrillers and sci-fi. Die Hard, The Terminator, oh, and Tremors ;). ETA - you have Speed on your list - these are like that.

Watching Predator with him and keeping a running commentary on the silly Man Tropes being deployed was hilarious.

No Princess Bride? inconceivable!

Attack the Block is a freakin’ brilliant fun and funny sci-fi thriller. The movie that brought attention to John Boyega, now Finn of the new Star Wars. A bunch of kids from the London projects (the block) encounter aliens and stand their ground.

My kids loved Shaun of the Dead.

And The Matrix.

Let me clarify my list a bit, because I know I missed some.

They have seen these as well …

Princess Bride - Liked it, but not sure if they truly appreciated all the humor.
Kiki’s Delivery Service - Thumbs Up
Raiders of the Lost Ark - Unfortunately, they didn’t care for it that much. Ok, but not as great as I hyped it to be.

As I recall more, I will list them.

You can use Wikipedia to list movies by year–that way you can remind yourself of movies you liked when you were around their age. For instance, these were the top films when I was 13.

Good idea. Thanks.

Ladyhawke
Explorers
Silver Streak
Smokey and the Bandit

Considering what month this is: Greased Lightning, the story of the first black driver in NASCAR.

We did watch Explorers, but they weren’t all that impressed, neither was I, considering it had been years since I saw it. I thought it was good way back when, but now - meh.

Every Which Way But Loose and Any Which Way You Can. Saw those with my dad in the theater; I was 10 for the former.

Those are terrible movies. I saw them as a young teen, but they’re terrible.

No, like Smokey and the Bandit, they’re products of the Seventies.

To the OP and his boys: turn off your brains and enjoy the ride.

Yeah, they may like Clyde and his antics in those films, so who knows.

Per Wikipedia, EWWBL was the fourth most popular film from that year, right behind Animal House.

James Bond! Saw Moore’s 007 with my dad as well. For Your Eyes Only is probably my favorite of his.

Just watched and really enjoyed the original Jumani. I hear they are re-making it. Although it is a Nickelodeon kid movie, Good Burger’s dumb humor made me laugh. Probably already seen but just in case: True Lies and Last Action Hero.

Yeah, I was going to offer Predator, Terminator, and Die Hard. Wonderful experiences with my son. Couldn’t have been much older than 10.

Really disappointed that none of the kids cared for The marx Bros.

I think you learn to appreciate and enjoy The Marx Brothers, especially Groucho when you’re college age.

Yes! You didn’t comment on them or a few others in my post, Dante G. What do you think? I swear Attack the Block is great!
