I just got the Daimajin collection on DVD, holy crap these are cool movies. I had only ever seen the first one pan-n-scanned on TV, but in full on widescreen they look amazing.
All three movies basically involve a stone statue coming to life and smacking down bad guys in feudal Japan. The first one, Daimajin is done in an odd pseudo-gothic Hammer horror style; The second, Return of Daimajin, is more of a juvenile adventure story which gets darker and darker until the Majin appears; The third, Wrath of Daimajin, is the best of the lot- basically starting out as a chambara samurai flick then having sume odd christian imagery (crucifixion, parting the sea…) when Majin shows up.
The second installment seems to have been directed by the same guy who directed the live action Lone Wolf and Child movies.
Basically, based on my memories of the first installment I got this DVD set expecting some quality kaiju cheese, what I got was three genuinely good movies.
I’ve only seen the first, but yes, it’s great.
Dark Horse Comics published a Godzilla comic which pitted Big G against a pseudo-Majin.
It’s available in paperback. Look for it, if you’re really a kaiju fan.
You’re giving me bad ideas for my next RPG campaign
