Dallas Dissed

With the massive and insane egos of Dallas sport owners Jerry Jones and Mark Cuban it is nice to know that there are people like Deangelo Jordan to remind them that there are better places to ply their trade. Haha Mark Cuban…karma bites you on the ass.

Translation: Deangelo Jordan reneges on his verbal commitment to the Dallas Mavs and resigns with the Clippers.

Amid reports that the Clippers helped Jackson barricade himself into his home to keep Cuban out, and that Cuban was desperately driving around downtown Houston trying to find this guy’s house.

It’s kind of bizarre.

I feel bad for Dallas fans because they let Chandler go and have no promising young players. But Cuban got himself eaten in the NBA shark tank,

I’m assuming this thread is about DeAndre Jordan, but no post has named him correctly yet. This is literally all Mike and Mike talked about this morning for like an hour. They think the Jordan and the Clippers organization violated some code of conduct by not informing Cuban of the change. I disagree. If I learn that a customer is considering pulling business from my competitor and awarding it to me, I don’t run and tell my competitor. That’s just ridiculous. The Clippers owed nothing to Cuban. Now, supposedly Jordan was ignoring calls from Cuban, and I would say that’s unprofessional and somewhat classless, but I guess he can consider that bridge burned. In 4 years when this contract is up do you think any other team is going to jump to try to sign him?

Yes.

Assume you were responding to the question of whether teams would try to sign DeAndre Jordan when this contract expires. Yes, some probably will pursue him (not the Mavs), but how can you take him seriously? Would you really feel good if you get a verbal agreement from him?

Or they will offer him a contract only when he can actually sign it and stay in the room until he signs it. Of course this might backfire on the Clips if his performance slips. Some argue he really isnt a max contract level player.

I don’t think I would find it very hard to take a 30 year old, All-NBA, DPOY candidate freak athlete of a center who’s led the league in FG% and rebounding seriously if he wanted to verbally commit to signing with me. I’d take that meeting 100 out of 100 times.

Hell, I’d try again if I was Cuban. He’s going to play for somebody. The only way it’s me is if I offer him a contract.

I can’t think of anything more hilarious than if DeAndre Jordan has a handshake agreement with Cubes in 4 years and turns around and signs with the Clippers again.

As far as I can tell this was just Jordan changing his mind, but this does show the potential for some pretty serious subterfuge given the way the free agency moratorium works. Someone like DJ could verbally agree to a contract with a team they have no intention of signing, causing that team to make a bunch of other roster moves that make no sense once that player doesn’t really sign. If a team thinks they’re adding a max-level player, they’ll stop pursuing other players of that level if they don’t have the cap space.

Love this take. Im so sick of hearing Jordan was obligated to look Cuban in the eye and tell him he was reneging. He owed Cuban NOTHING.

I have nothing against Mark Cuban, but you cant tell me the guy (and Steve Ballmer, for that matter) didn’t acquire billions by screwing a few people on a deal or two . . .

Imagine you asked a girl to prom, and then on the eve of prom you heard from her friend that she had decided to go with her ex-boyfriend instead, leaving you with nobody to go with. Wouldn’t you feel like she at least owed you an explanation in this situation?

Jordan screwed the Mavs. All the other dominoes fell while they assumed (rightfully so) that they had a done deal, and when the music stopped there were no free agents left to sign.

This guy is not taking it well. They played it on my local LA sports radio station yesterday and were cracking up. Its worth a listen if you have a few minutes.

Come on, bro. Not even an equivalent comparison.

As I am sure a billionaire jerk like Mark Cuban or Steve Ballmer would say to someone they surely have screwed over, “Its not personal, its business.”

That’s actually the point. Even a jerk will at least inform you personally and explain that it’s not personal. Jordan not only did not inform Cuban that he was going to screw him over, but he lied about what he was doing.

Why do you think this?

Cuban knows that it wasn’t personal. And even if it WAS, too bad. Jordan may have upset a lot of Mavs fans, and I can understand their frustration, but owners do what is in their best interests all the time. Do you think Cuban would have signed Jordan anyway if during that interim week he lost a hand playing with fireworks?

You can say Jordan acted poorly, but the truth is, he did what he thought was best for himself. And in 4 years, someone else will pay him exactly as much as they need to. No way does an owner not talk to him if they think he is the missing piece to a championship team.

And yeah, Cuban should re-visit signing him 4 years from now if Jordan can put the Mavs over the top. If he lets ego and his personal feelings get in the way (and right now he seems pretty upset), that’s his right, but it won’t help him win if Jordan is the best fit for what they are doing at the time.

I think Mark Cuban would do what’s best for his business but I do not think he would blatantly lie as Jordan did.

You keep saying Jordan lied, but as I understand it, there was an agreement in principle, but the NBA has a week-long moratorium on signing any contracts. Sort of like the high-pressure sales, 3-day cooling off period that consumers get on things like gym memberships.

I don’t know WHY they have that week, but it seems like it is set up for exactly this type of scenario. Player looks to leave via free agency, another team (in this case his original team) comes in to convince him to go with them, and he is swayed.

I don’t even know the numbers, but I am guessing staying in LA made Jorday $15-20 million more than signing in Dallas.

That is a TON of money. Cuban is spoiled multi-multi millionaire (billionaire for all I know) and he’s only getting richer. If the owners don’t want that week off, they need to negotiate it out of the CBA.

I don’t see any lie. If the rumors are to be believed, he wouldn’t talk to Cuban on the phone after the visits from Clipper personnel… And Cuban supposedly teied finding him by driving around his apartment. I hope THAT one isn’t true.

That is not lying. If you think Cuban wouldn’t do the same (tell someone one thing, get a better deal elsewhere and take advantage of where the biggest payday is without talking to the first party), i would say you are either very naive, or have tremendous faith in Mark Cuban.

I believe it’s there to allow time to finalize all the league finances. The league year ends at the end of June; that’s when the player contracts are up, and also the end of the year for all the other financials. The salary cap for the upcoming year is set based on the previous year’s finances, but that includes transactions happening right up until June 30th. The moratorium is in place so that contracts don’t get officially signed until there’s been time to calculate the final numbers from the previous year.

This seems to be the best timeline of how the whole thing played out.

All I know is that basketball players have a big thing for ‘respect’. I think that Jordan changing his mind is fine, but not saying anything to Cuban or Parsons is immature at best. I just know I don’t want to hear Jordan talk about being ‘disrespected’ at any point he is under this contract.

ETA: Jordan was asking parsons about where to live in Dallas after deciding to go back to the Cloppers. If that isn’t a lie, it accomplished the same thing.
