Dalmations and their spots

What is the purpose of the spots on dalmations? I always thought spots were for camoflauge, but I cant think of anywhere that is black and white that they could go to hide. Are they aliens? Maybe they are related to the chesire cat. Just something I wonder about.

A Dalmatian’s spots serve no evolutionary purpose; they are not a product of natural selection. They’re a recessive trait present in all dogs, brought out in Dalmatians by inbreeding.

We have a dalmatian - Pixel. My husband and I are convinced that she has 666 spots on her - that would explain a lot. Alternate theory: what she lacks in brains she makes up for in spots.
But she does have pretty eyes…
