The beaver isn’t our national rodent for nothing!
Way to go guys!
Well Damn!
I had a nightmare about beavers last night. Between seeing that article yesterday, and the one that tried to kill me on the bike path recently, the dang things give me the creeps.
Edit: Not seeing this specific page, but an article about the same thing.
I loves me beavers!!!
Interesting.
About a year ago I “discovered” an area where the beavers have probably had a series of dams for a longer time period than those discussed in that article. The dams are not “bigger” (but they are big), but there are more of em and have been there awhile. Maybe I need to send some beaver experts an email?
Went and Google Earthed my beaver site. Its 0.6 miles southwest of Kinston, Alabama. 31 12.638 north, 86 10.675 west.
You can see that the beavers have turned a tiny creek (look north of there and south of there) into a wide lake/marsh between two low hills/ridges. It looks like a river delta in the images, but it is a series of wide shallow lakes. Kind of like a beaver version of stepped rice paddies. To paddle through that area you have to drop down a half dozen or so beaver lake/dam levels. A very neat paddle. Tracing the one dam I can specifically remember, I come up with a length of 400 meters. Not a record setter but certainly world class. There might be a record setting length dam in there…need to go back and look more carefully. Those beavers there have certainly been there awhile and been busy thats for sure.
Pretty good for a bunch of redneck Alabama beavers
Yeah, not too shabby. But, the only thing that really matters is that the record stays here in Canada (and the beaver on the nickel).
And, for your further edification, here’s some pics and video of the wonder itself.
I want to try to convince some beavers to move to some property I have in Montana. I have a nice creek, but I want a pond. However, I can’t dam the creek without permits from 500 agencies and neighbors.
HOWEVER, if a nice beaver family moved in a dammed the creek, I would get my pond, they would get a habitat, and we all win!
Is there a ‘dry’ valley where you could build a dam without permits from 500 agencies and neighbors? Either that or go trap you some beavers from Three Forks.
I once shot a beaver while bowfishing. What a mistake.
No. And if you do, you’ll get a dam letter from the state telling you to tear it down or face fines.
Wow, how…er…Eager.
And people say Mississippi is backwards.
I’m really impressed that you can see it from space!
Dam!
European beavers don’t build dams?
Huh. I didn’t know that. Learn something new every day, I guess.
Damn socialist beavers probably get them provided by the state.
In Soviet Russia, beavers dam you!
