I can see, uh, wirery insides of it (I hope you get what I mean, English is my second language and I don’t know technical terms).
It’s still working thought. Is it dangerous to use? Should I try to get it replaced immediately or can this wait?
Get yourself some electrical tape and re-wrap the section of cord that’s bad.
Dangerous to use and you should get a new one.
You might be able to get away with it for a while, but you’re taking a chance – I had a similar experience and the cable eventually got to the point where the wires shorted and it got hot and smoked. Not sure how bad it would have gotten if I hadn’t been there.
If you insist on using the cable in its current state (and you shouldn’t), then put some electrical tape around it to insulate and support the damaged section. Note that this will make it more difficult to tell when the problem gets worse.
Also, unplug the laptop from the wall whenever you’re not immediately in attendance upon int.
If all you are seeing is the “braid” (ground connection), then coat the worn area with goop, and it will last forever.
If the damage you see is between the wall and the transformer module, that cord is carrying full AC current and is more dangerous. If you don’t know how to make a proper repair, that needs to be replaced. If only a single wire’s insulation is off, you could probably tape it safely, but that requires that you know what you are looking at.
If the damage is between the transformer module and the computer, that cable is only carrying up to 24VDC and is not dangerous from the standpoint of personal injury. Of course a spark and possible fire could happen if two wires short out. So again, it’s important to make sure that only one wire is involved. If more than two are involved, you have to make sure they are separated and insulated separately.
If you replace the whole unit, make sure it’s not a cheap $10 Chinese model. I tried one of those and the power was not “clean.” I stopped using it rather than damage the laptop. I switched to a used OEM model.
To add to this, if bare wires between the brick and the computer short together, it could burn out the brick.
I’d tape it up and then be on the lookout for a new one. The second I see one, if I can afford it, I’d get it and replace it.
Now, if it were some lesser used device, I might take more time on it. But not this.
