I don’t own a car at the moment, but when I do think about getting one, Nissan cars generally rank pretty high on my list.
But then I saw their latest ad campaign, with their new celebrity spokesman.
Of all the celebrities that I’ve seen come out here for a quick buck, this is the first one that’s actually turned me off the product. Richard Gere? No problem. Mel Gibson? Big deal. Tom Cruise? Couldn’t care less. But when a company chooses no less of a money-grubbing, media-whore scumbag than Uri Geller, I draw the line. And there he was, surrounded by bent spoons, babbling about how wonderful Nissan compacts are. Just the thought of all the money he’s raking in with this is turning my stomach.

(flash animation in Japanese) The top camera button plays an interview with him, the bottom goes to the commercials featuring him.
Even if the guy weren’t such an absolute creep, why on earth would I buy a car on the advice of a guy whose claim to fame is warping metal?
Maybe it was an attempt at translating this hugely-successful Spanish campaign from a couple years back. It featured a race to the South Pole - each pilot had Georgi Dann as his copilot. Singing “La Barbacoa”. Ugh! Dann used to be one of the guys who competed for “song of the summer” every year; I must say that the notion of being able to get rid of his company sounds like a very good reason to try and win the race.
