I’d say his point was that ascribing motives to someone declining aid in the absence of any other information is pointless. I’m sure the people dying in nursing homes in New Orleans following Katrina were pleased that there was such a financial discrepancy between the US and Cuba, and were gratified that the Cuban doctors who volunteered to help were rebuffed.
Did President Bush refuse the help because he wanted to cement his iron grasp on the country? No he didn’t, there are all kinds of reasons to turn down help from some people, and they don’t all involve undercutting authority.

Also…how is this a US thing? From what I’ve been reading it’s not just the US aid that has been rejected…or at least initially rejected or put on hold.

Many other western countries (including Canada) have sent money to the aid agencies working in Myanmar. The American aid was offered conditionally: provided the US send its own emergency response team.
For some reason, there may be countries with reason not to trust the US. Hard to believe, huh?

Many nations tried to send aid rapidly…but that aid is just now starting to trickle in. After over 20k people have died and are dieing from lack of food and water because the government over there is dragging it’s feet.
Again…this isn’t about the US. Don’t want our aid…fine by me. Obviously a lot of folks in this thread have a major chip on their shoulder concerning the US’s heavy demands for our aid. How about the aid from the OTHER nations? Think it’s cool that the government there dragged it’s feet for their unconditional aid while their people died?
I’m getting the distinct impression that this situation is cool with everyone in this thread because really it’s all about how they rejected US aid…as if that is the really important issue involved here.

No skin off my nose…and less cash out of my pocket if they feel that way about it. Not like I think we should force anyone to accept US help if it’s so repugnant…

Well I’m not sure of the religious makeup of Myanmar/Burma but wasn’t there a couple major issues with aid workers during the tsunami and some religious recruiting/witnessing that really got some of the affected countries upset.
Vicious military junta doesn’t care about the people it rules but only its own power. In other news, bear shits in woods. If the junta were the type of guys who cared about their people, they’d assassinate themselves.
