Agreed. How hard could it be to set up a speciality flour mill? Like a craft brewery. I see a market niche.
Agreed. There’s even a small mill near where I live that still mills grain and will (IIRC) mill the stuff you bring in, too. But we’re apparently Yankees (baseball players?) so I guess we’d screw it up or something.
In a Southern context, Yankees or “Damnyankees” include the states colored blue on this map. Maybe not so much California and Oregon, which didn’t really participate so much in The War, but definitely including such Mid-Western states as Ohio or Minnesota; many Ohioans and Minnesotans fought and died in the Civil War.
Have you seen this call for comments?
She also asks later for comments on WL Corn Meal.
I did see that request, although I haven’t yet mailed. I also saw Darnell’s peculiarly racist and nutty, but hilarious, comments.
For those who haven’t visited the thread, there’s a nutcase who goes by Darnell and makes such gems as
There’s more and there are responses. Darnell’s got a point, but gas is just too damned high right now to expect millions of white southerners to relocate. Of course he taps into the fears of myself and other white southerners that the rumors are true: that if Barack Obama is elected Black People Order 66 will be carried out and 200 million white Americans will be forced to go to Canada.
Odd that Smuckers would move milling away from the customer base. That seems a strange business decision in an era of sky-high transportation costs.
Wow, nice to know. I never considered the Mid-West to be Yankee and I doubt they do. Of course I’m just some ignorant 3rd generation immigrant whose great-grandparents came over after the Union won and The Lady was put up.
Ogre, I still think it is silly to still consider Buckeyes as Yanks or Damn Yankees. Good luck finding some local specialty mill flour to replace your beloved White Lily.
Jim
Don’t knock it 'til you’ve tried it.
Aw, they’re all yankees.
Not that there’s anything wrong with it.
We’re Yankees. It’s okay.
Sorry about y’all’s flour, though.

What They don’t want you to know is that Smucker’s is secretly planning to replace White Lily Flour with Black Mambo Flour.
Aux barricades!!!
I also hate to point this out but White Lilly flour has pretty much been a Yankee product all along. It’s made in eastern Tennessee which was mostly pro-Union country during the war.
Nah, only seasonal. After nearly three decades as a resident, I can affirm that the South is a perfectly lovely place. I still haven’t given up hope that one day we can convince all the idiots to emigrate.
I feel your pain about the flour, but I’m afraid I cried all my nostalgic tears out long ago when they yanked “Li’l Darkie Shoe Polish” from the shelves of Winn-Dixie.
As a presumed member of “teh South suxxors” types, I can say that the South is pretty good at sucking federal tax dollars. As of 2004, GA and TX were the only states in Dixie that paid in more than they received. Eight of the top 14 receiver states are in Dixie, the other 6 being sparsely populated /agricultural states- NM, AK, ND, HI, MT, SD. The top donor states are, in order, NJ, CT, NH, MN, NV, IL, MA, CA, CO, DE, NY, WI, MI, WA.
So, if y’all are still pissed off at us “damn yankees,” feel free to return all that money.
Well, flour milling is a bulk reducing industry, so it makes sense to locate it near the sources of grain, rather than the customers. Which makes me worry they have no intention of keeping the same raw materials as before, which will of course lead to a different product.
It seems to me to be all part of the ceaseless and sad trend towards homogenization. I like different regions having different stores and different products, dammit.
You wouldn’t have any stats on which states had the highest percentage of Yankee transplants?
(I don’t really care - I’m just in this thread like one of those civillians who went out to watch First Bull Run)
If you’ll hijack a White Lily flour thread to bash Southern states for inequitable tax structures from 4 years ago (an inequity shared with more than half of the states) then I’d hate to learn your feelings on ethnic minorities due to the high incarceration and public assistance rates. Not that I’d expect you to have the guts to express them here, of course. ![]()
Despite the hijack nature of this, might this just not, at a chance, be to do with the higher instances of poverty in those states? Also possibly to do with the positioning of military bases near where disproportionate numbers of volunteers hale from?
I hate to point out that White Lily was founded in 1883, long after the Civil War, and that Knoxville (where the company is located) was, not that it’s particularly relevant, a pro-Confederate stronghold that voted 2:1 in favor of secession.
