And clever little comments like this are what make us say that there is anti-Southern bigotry on the SDMB. After all, if you’d said “it isn’t as if all of us have a list of American Indian institutions to crush. We feel that Jackson did enough,” you’d have been smacked down by every moderator on this board.
If you did accept McDonald’s “Sweet Tea-like beverage” as authentic and indicative of southern sweet tea, then it would be offensive. (Southern cuisine is roughly akin to the Qu’ran: the true version is in Arabic and all else, even the most meticulously and piously translated non-Arabic versions, are considered commentary; tea made in a boiler from Lipton tea bags, steeped, and poured still smoking hot into a glass receptacle over so much cane sugar that with 8 more grains it would be syrup is sweet tea, all else is ‘tea with sugar in it’.)
I never said so, but yep. No response yet, but I fully expect a message saying “our commitment to quality of White Lily flour is unchanged blah blah blah…”
Well I would have, except that I figured it’s usage would be understood by more Dopers. I was wrong about that. Also, as I said, I wasn’t using it in a 100% humorous manner. The relocation of the mill makes me quite sincerely furious.
How about a little respect for the corporate culture of homogenization and doing anything for a buck―especially since it looks like it kicked your Southern tradition’s ass once again.
And do we even know the new floor tastes different:
Two? That is not a lot of bakers. How many bakers were involved in the test? Two? 25? 4,000? The article does not say.
I take it, then, that it would be similarly understood that a reference to “ignorant rednecks” refers only to that portion of Southerners, however small, that are active bigots, religiously intolerant, agressively xenophobic, and defiantly uneducated? Or would that be immediatly interpreted as a slam against all Southerners as a group? My money’s on the latter, but I’ve been wrong before.
You’re wrong. I know quite a few ignorant rednecks. I also know many ignorant rednecks that are not Southern. I also know many Southerners who are not ignorant rednecks. See where I’m going?
There is a subtle difference between centuries of genocide committed by people of one continent upon people of another, and four years of putting down an insurrection, don’t you think?
So why is that bigotry and Sampiro’s joke about beating his literate slaves not? I think they were both offered as tongue-in-cheek and both moderately amusing. I didn’t read either of them as literal opinion.
How the fuck is entering a thread about WHITE LILY flour to basically call the South a “welfare society” that receives more federal dollars than it pays in federal taxes (with no examinations of the causes for this discrepancy or reference to the fact that 30 states of the union receive more tax dollars than they pay) anything other than blatant south-bashing? It has nothing to do with flour, the subject of government budgeting had not been mentioned at all. The thread’s about, or was originally about, the closing of a brand name pretty much every southerner reared in rural areas or reared by parents who were reared in rural areas is familiar with- it’s up there with Goo-Goo Clusters, Moonpies, Goody’s Powder, Martha White Corn Meal, RC cola (probably the most popular item outside the south of these), Jim Dandy grits, etc.- it’s a both nostalgic and living cultural touchstone to southerners much like, say “Zoom zoom zoom zooma zoom do” is to people who were kids in the '70s. If my grandmother or aunts or mom had said “Bring me some Martha White corn meal from the store”, she did NOT mean “Martha White corn meal… or whatever’s own sale, doesn’t matter”- it meant Martha by-God White.
Now, if somebody had started a thread two years ago on (since it was mentioned above) “Marshall Field becoming Macy’s— man I’m pissed” and I’d popped into say “You know what I think Chicago should be pissed about? The fact 20% of the people who live there are on public assistance!”, that’s thread shitting. Has nothing to do with Marshall Fields, whatever. So why bring it up?
So you state that if someone wants to complain that a century old institution that employs hundreds of people with no transferrable skills is being closed down and relocated to a place that makes an inferior product, then the south should re-pay money to the Federal government because he used the word “the South Suxxors” or whatever? Did Andy Griffith and or Junior Samples used to sneak into your room and night and spank you til you were red or something that you need to bring up a totally irrelevant point about government funding of southern states? And if you want to just point out for the purposes of our elucidation that you think the south is worthless because of federal tax distribution, then have some balls- go up some other group- racial, religious, ethnic, whatever- who gets a disproportionate amount of money in government funds. Or do you just, as demonstrated in other threads, have an irrational beef with any southern consideration that’s not bland and homogenized?
Hey, **Sampiro ** and Ogre. This is simpler than you think. If the Thread Title did not have Damn Yankees in it, a good number of us would not have bothered reading this thread.
Once you use a phrase like that in a title in the pit, I think you cannot act surprised and put out when a poster like **Great Dave ** comes in to bash the south a bit.
If you just pitted the asshole uncaring execs at Smuckers, do you really think **Dave ** would have visited and brought up extraneous facts?
This thread title was pretty much asking for Yankees to wander in.
Yeah, and it doesn’t say who’s blind–the bakers? The reporter? The guy who bought the flour? And why would they need a vision test to evaluate freakin’ flour anyway? Shoddy journalism! You go, Inchy!
Of course it is. The assertion that any of us are required to come from the cultural background in question, or we are incapable of understanding the issue, is simply ridiculous. We may not be able to understand the issue completely, with the bone-deep knowledge that comes from marinating in it from early childhood, but it’s not like that or “ignorant” are the only two choices. Much as you’d like to act like they are.
On this issue, I think it’s pretty clear I am completely uncaring and to a lesser extent callous. If it’s any consolation, on any number of subjects other than flour, you might find me otherwise.
You mean it is important TO YOU. I read Southern papers too, and I’ve hardly seen it “all over them.” Even if it were, “importance” is still subjective. Truly important news events are on CNN and the BBC, not just Southern newspapers.
I never said a damn thing about how YOU should feel. But by the same token you don’t get to tell me how I should feel, or what is or is not “important”, or what does or does not constitute “ignorance.”
Wow, you’ve really lost all sense of perspective in this, haven’t you? I mean, it’s not just laying on the side table with your car keys; it got hauled away to the landfill and it’s gonna take a long drive and some digging to retrieve it.
eta: in respnse to Sampiro
I brought it up because 1)I felt that there was some whining about the North trying to crush the South, when in fact, the North has been propping up the South for some time, and 2) it went ignored in another thread where I mentioned it (granted, I didn’t lay it out as I did here) and 3)to start a discussion about why this is so. Was it thread-shitting? Probably, but it was headed in an ugly direction already.
And FTR, I never said the South was worthless, just good at getting Federal funds. Indeed, there are many Southern things I like- the hook to Sweet Home Alabama, pulled pork bbq, Elvis, hush puppies and catfish, biscuits and gravy, Bill Clinton (pre-2008).
This makes it all the more inexplicable that you decided to jump down the throat of the first person who replied in a slightly light-hearted manner. If you’re allowed to claim semi-seriousness (however two-facedly), how come everyone who doesn’t reply, “oh how terrible,” gets greeted with shrieks of how they don’t UNDERSTAND YOUR PAIN?
You’ve not merely gone off the deep end here, you’ve plunged in head first wearing a replica civil war uniform and firing blanks at the pool attendants, then acted offended while other bathers stand around asking what the fuck you’re doing. Certainly, there are some floating bandages and bits of TP in the pool that might be annoying you now you’re there, but you jumped in it.
And that, my friends, is how you stretch an analogy to breaking point.
