Not again! Two weeks ago, our furnace was on the fritz, and started blowing cold air. The repairman came, determined it needed cleaned (the fan was blowing when the safety kicked in) and all was well.
Now, it’s doing it AGAIN. Dammit! I’m FREEZING! And I believe it’s going down into the thirties tonight.
Gas or electric? If it’s electric check the breaker(s). Sometimes there are separate breakers for the fan and the heating elements. Also a timer that makes sure the fan runs a little after the elements shut off.
If it’s a gas furnace maybe sombody else can help.
Hope you have an electric blanket or a warm S.O.! Brrrrr…
Damn, I can’t remember if it’s gas or electric. I’ll have to check.
I have neither an S.O. or an electric blanket. I do, however, have six cats, and I can count on at least one of them to be willing to sleep on my feet.
And loads of fleece pjs and warm socks. Thank the maker for fuzzy chenille socks!
This happened to me last year, right around Christmas. We have gas heat, and it was pretty cold (I think about -25 or so) when the furnace decided to stop working.
Turns out a sensor wasn’t working. That was a cold evening until the repair guy got there, I’ll tell ya! I think it dropped to about 50 in the house.
This thread reminds me how much I appreciate our furnace maintenance man. A few years ago our furnace stopped working on a Sunday night, and I called his answering service. The furnace is located outside and he spent about two hours outdoors after midnight on a Sunday in a -15°C blizzard fixing it and was actually still cheerful at the end. (And the bill was even reasonable!)
I went away for Christmas last year and travelled all day to get back. About 2:00 AM I stumble in after dreaming of my bed for the last two hours on the road. Hmm, it’s colder than usual in here (I keep at it 55 when I’m not there)…gosh the floor is freezing! Better go check the thermostat by the fridge–OOPS! I did not expect to slip and fall on my ass on a frozen patch of ice on the kitchen floor.
Next day the landlord replaced the furnace, after the oil company guys said they had to attached a caveat that they would fix it but didn’t proclaim it safe.
Luckily nothing burst, and I had an electric blanket to get through that night. My landlords live next door so the frozen toilet water was not too big a deal.
Darn kids! It was so cold when I was young that you had to chop a hole in the toilet bowl ice to take a leak. And we were happy we had an axe in the bathroom!
I’m feeling fairly charitable towards my furnace right now, seeing as how I was dumb and blew the fuse on it, yet it continues to function just fine after a new fuse. That and I note it’s about -5 outside right now (low 20 something to those south of the border)
Well, it’s all in working order-he came in today to replace the valve, (he fixed it yesterday, but still wanted to replace it), and all is well. Thank god, it’s just starting to get really cold around here.
