dan savage redux....hope this is ok

Yeah, there’s a lot of stupid, evil stuff in there, but “Women who don’t share my moral values deserve to have their insides rot out,” is really above and beyond.

Good point.
Very good point.

But if anyone wanted to get in on the other shite in there I’d be happy. There’s a lot of shite.

This is the part I love:

So, let me get this straight: only single women are poor enough need state-funded contraception. I’m sure there are a lot of married women working for Wal-Mart or at minimum wage jobs who’ll be happy to read this. From a purely economic viewpoint, providing contraception is a lot cheaper than providing care for pregnancies, even if you go with minimal pre-natal care. Also, I’ve always figured that the surest way to reduce abortions is to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies. I would think that providing reliable contraception is one way to go about that. Also, if we stop single women from having sex, what are single men to do? Have sex only with married women or with each other? Forget the children! Won’t someone think of the poor, horny, single guys out there?

A letter to my weekly local independent paper pointed out something I wasn’t aware of. Ovulation often happens after intercourse, while there are sperm already present in the Fallopian tubes. Emergency contraception mostly works by preventing ovulation. In other words, how can it cause abortions if there’s no egg there to fertilize?

I’m not going to comment on the whole HPV virus business, other than to say it does make me wonder where some people’s values are. In the words of the One Whom these folks claim to follow, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

This is correct. EC works by preventing ovulation or fertilization. Theoretically, it might also prevent implantation - which some anti-choice people call “abortion” - but it’s never been shown or proven to do so. One thing is for sure, if you are pregnant already and take EC, it will NOT cause an abortion. If a zygote has implanted already, it will not slough it off and “abort” it.

It takes about 72 hours for the sperm to reach the egg and fertilize it. EC only works in the first 72 hours. If a sperm meets the egg and fertilizes it before you take EC, you will be pregnant. It will, as far as we know, implant. It will not abort. That’s why there’s a 25% failure rate for EC.

Sorry to be bumping my own thread but I’ve been without a computer for weeks (can you imagine the pain!!!) and I’m just catching up. And I had to say:

You’re kidding. It’s not even really “abortion” by the widest standard? Shouldn’t they be out in the streets protesting menstruation?

Oh honestly.

But I love what I learn on this site. Thanks.
