Dan Simmons' Hyperion to be a SyFy mini-series

Story

Hyperion and its follow-ups are masterpieces of SF, I just hope SyFy don’t screw this up. They are throwing a lot of big names and money at it so we shall see. One of the main challenges will be the depiction of the Shrike, one of the most terrifying creations in literature. It’s good to see that at last Hollywood is taking an interest in Dan Simmons, one of the greatest talents in both SF and horror.

Bradley Cooper is the only actor they’ve announced - Kassad? the Consul? Martin Silenus? He can’t possibly be Hoyt or Weintraub.

I’m cautiously optimistic.

SyFy is usually dreadful in whatever they do, but as long as the Halmis aren’t attached I’m cautiously optimistic.

Sci-Fi on SyFy? After being terribly disappointed after waiting for years for this channel to become reality, then seeing nothing but Fantasy and Horror listed for their programming, I was glad when they did away with their “Sci-Fi” moniker. That frees them to broadcast wrasslin’ shows.

For the record, I did watch the three episode miniseries for “Alice in Wonderland”. Of course, the story was the first thing go…

Will sharks and tornadoes be involved?

The reboot of Battlestar Galactica was good, though flawed. The trailers for the Expanse make me cautiously optimistic. Hyperion could be good, though I don’t see how they could do it justice without a budget near a billion dollars.

I could enjoy this as long as they stick to the original Canterbury Tales style and tell each person’s story as an episode.

If they attempt to do any of the later books in the series, I’ll be disappointed. Not only would those require a much bigger budget, but I just didn’t enjoy the rest of the books nearly as much as the first one.

Their miniseries of the first 3 **Dune **books some years back, with William Hurt as Duke Leto, were much more faithful to the books than the David Lynch versions, so there’s that.

Is that the one with Keats as a character? I’d watch it just for that.
