Dancing with the Stars -- DWTS -- Spring 2012

Katherine has dropped 1.5 stone (21 lbs) on dwts. The article has before and after photos. I have to agree that she looks better with curves. She really was at the ideal weight before joining dwts. But, there’s no way anyone can rehearse this much without dropping weight.
Katherine is losing weight on dwts.

For anyone who, like me, couldn’t watch:

Roshon and Sherri were in the bottom two. Sherri went home.

Did the “dance-off” thing between the bottom two they were advertising start this week, or will it start next. I think it’s a good idea. I mean, it’s a scary thought that one of the very best of this season was in the bottom two last night. A judges’ dance-off would at least ensure that a good but less popular dancer wouldn’t get the boot.

There was no dance-off.

Where they really in the bottom two? I thought in DWTS, the final two aren’t necessarily the 2 lowest in voting.

I don’t like it. It feels like an attempt to keep people who don’t have the fanbase on the show. It’s not good when someone like Sabrina goes home, but this seems like a cheat.
It will really feel rigged if the same person always ends up in the dance-off.

This time, they specifically said these two were the bottom two.

Our sweet Welsh opera singer is getting corrupted by Mark, Maria,William, and Derek. I’m glad she’s having a bit of fun. Katherine’s had a few rough months and coming to LA for dwts is a nice break from her stodgy life of classical music performances.

The dwts pros come out to support the Vegas Premier.

Maria is just one unlucky celebrity. This week she does a big time face plant to match her injured rib and feet. I’m glad she didn’t lose any teeth.

Highlight of the night was seeing Mark take a shot to the nads in rehearsal. That hurts even if you are wearing a cup. I was very impressed with the traditional tango he choreographed for Katherine. She looked so lovely out there tonight.

Gladys is just making her age a non-issue. The lady is out touring and rehearsing for dwts at 67. She did a pretty good Samba tonight too. Especially when you consider the limited rehearsal time she gets every week.

Overall, it was a really fun week to watch.

Mark got it in the nads at least TWICE!

I tossed a couple votes Katherine’s way tonight. Mark kept his face under control during her dance and she looked phenomenal. More importantly, she got a vote for each nad-bang we got to see Mark take. He annoys the crap out of me.

Is it just me or is Ballas keeping himself together a bit better this season? He’s not bugging me as much as he has in the past.

No, Mark is definitely less annoying than usual this season – maybe because he knows she’ll go ahead and kick him in the balls should the occasion call for it.

Loving Gladys. There was very little content to that whatever it was, and it’s just about time for her to go home – though fuck the viewing public if she’s not around for Motown Week – but what she’s doing is charming and fun and enjoyable to watch.

Too bad Jaleel turned out to be a scumbag. Whether the yelling at Kym stories are true, false, or somewhere in between, it’s definitely tainted my perception of him, and my perception of him is completely filtered through the “this is not a nice person” vibe.

Several excellent tangos last night – culminating in Donald and Peta’s, which was phenomenal. Mark and Katherine’s also good, as was Maria and Derek’s. Those are my guesses for final three, though given William’s rabid fan base – and completely competent performances – he obviously can’t be ruled out. (And seriously, WTF kind of name for a Cuban is William Levy?)

Gavin seems to have lost interest, which is too bad, I kind of liked him. Roshon is just annoying, as young uns often are. Melissa has done a perfectly competent job but she just doesn’t have the physical capability to go to the end.

New blog from Louis Van Amstel. I’d really love seeing Louis as a guest judge if Len takes a week off again.

Anna and Louis nearly set the stage on fire last night with Santana. Check out that crisp footwork in the last 30 seconds of the dance. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Louis is back dancing with Cheryl in tonights results show.

Yes. In fact, last night I liked Mark’s choreography better than Derek’s. It’s been quite a while since I could say that.

I think Mark is almost as good a choreographer as Derek. Derek has the edge on music that is ridiculously hard to choreograph to, plus in general, his is just a more likeable persona. But both are creative choreographers who know how to particularly appeal to this, at best, middle-brow audience. Louis, for example, is a brilliant choreographer, but his appeal is greater to a more knowledgable audience.

Don and Peta got a real break this week by getting actual tango music to dance to. I don’t understand why DwtS has such a problem with this. It’s not like there’s a dearth of tango music out there to work with. But most couples get stuck with music that is not suitable.

Jaleel actually did a dance that didn’t look at all like a foxtrot, and did it very well. Roshon bolstered his wonderful sharpness and precision with a little smoothness. If you could somehow combine the two of them, you’d have a really great dancer.

Katherine was beautiful as usual. She has certainly been the best dancer from the get-go. I find her a tad hard to take because I’m not wild about a 31 year old beauty whose earnings are estimated to have exceeded a million pounds, and who admittedly has some history of illegal drug use to be presenting herself as a naive ingenue to American audiences. It rings false to me, although her execution of that persona has been flawless. Maybe she really is a wide-eyed innocent, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

I think I’d rather see Melissa go home than Gladys. Melissa comes across to me as fragile; I’m afraid she’ll snap like a twig. She’s not a serious contender, and I don’t get the pleasure from watching her that I do from watching Gladys, even though technicaly she’s probably superior. But Gavin should probably go home before either of them. A pity, as he seems to have a lot of charm, and to be enjoying himself. But technically, he’s not up to the level of the rest of the contestants.

William Levy sounds like the name of a CPA from Long Island or something. Very strange name for a Cuban hunk. Seems like a nice guy, is certainly a competent, even good dancer. But I just don’t get all the screaming about him. Sure, he’s got a good body and a reasonably attractive face, but it’s not like there isn’t any number of great male bodies with attractive faces running around this show. If there’s one thing this show has in spades, it’s eye candy! So why are the screamers latched on to him?

Seemed like a much higher standard of dancing last night than the previous week, and a couple of them (Katherine/Mark and Donald/Peta) were downright riveting. Liked William’s turn as well but IIRC he didn’t seem to move his feet as well as Katherine did. Regardless, I think the Argentine Tango is my new favorite ballroom dance style.

Next best for me was Maria/Derek (and so, what, are they a couple then?) but maybe a half notch below the others just mentioned.

Gotta think Gavin is toast, if not this week then the next; as someone else has mentioned, he seems to have checked out of the competition.

I have no idea whether or not Derek and Maria are a couple, but that kiss had nothing to do with sex and everything to do with vote-getting. I wouldn’t go so far as Carrie Ann and call it selling out, but it was definitely in there because they want to increase fan interest/speculation.

The kiss was dumb. It was the tightest-lipped, silliest thing in the world.

Anything to keep her mouth shut!
